This is part 3 of the "Dead 733 MHz" computer I have sitting idle at home.

Part 1 — Generic Power Supply (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?p=1096419#post1096419)
Part 2 — Hard Drive not detected in BIOS (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=157790)

Part 3 deals with a CD-RW that, if it's working, would be salvageable.

Problem is: I can connect it to the computer, and power, but it is not detected by the system. Also, pressing the eject key results in a loud metal-to-metal scraping sound that persists for several seconds.

I'm perfectly fine to let it gather dust for another x number of years, but if anybody has any opinions?

Did you try connecting to another working computer to see if the problem persists or not?

Sounds like it's a goner to me.

Yes. I plugged it into an IBM Netvista, which is where the metal scraping sound was heard. I promptly unplugged it and returned it to the dead 733, vowing never to plug it in again :P
