If SBC doesn't do the install, you'll get instructions...

I just hope I'm not making a mistake by switching I like my Roadrunner but the DSL is cheaper.
Which model modem did SBC ship you?
The self install kit comes with a CD and detailed instructions that a 4th grader can understand. However, be VERY CAREFUL with the CD - if you just click through everything, you will wind up with more Yahoo crap installed than you know what do do with - it's as bad as AOL.

Not to hijack - but I'm making the same move. I personally hate Comcast and am tired of throwing money to them so I'm switching to ATT (SBC) dsl. I have a Linksys wireless router - how do I set it up for the dsl? They have 0 (zero, ziltch, nada, nothing) in the form of instructons for using a router inline with your connection.
For what it's worth, the modem is a Speedstream 4100 ethernet ADSL modem.

I probably shouldn't be replying here as I have never had DSL service but isn't it similar to cable in that you have a modem that connects to the PC via an ethernet cable? If so, couldn't one simply hook it up to the WAN port on the router just like with a cable modem?
Okay, Dave - here is how you do it without messing around with the nasty yellow CD.
A. On your start service date, and before disconnecting from Comcast, use IE (Firefox won't work) and go here:
https://sbcreg.sbcglobal.net/SBCYahooRegEARWeb/
This is the back door for setting up your account. It will want to download a Yahoo mail control, refuse it, and you will be stuck. HOWEVER, by the time you get that far in the process, your username and password that you chose WILL be activated.
B. Connect the modem DIRECTLY to your computer, restart your computer. Follow the below steps:
1. In your web browser browse to 192.168.0.1 This address will be located on a yellow sticker on the bottom of your modem.
2. The first screen will ask you for your Modem Access Code. This also will be located on the same yellow sticker.
3. Select Advanced from the blue buttons on the left.
4. Click the PPP locations button.
5. The modem may ask your for the Modem Access Code again. If so type it in again and click continue.
6. Select the radio button labeled, "Bridged Mode (PPPoE is not used)"
7. Click Save Changes.
8. A "PPP Location Warning" page will come up. Click "Change PPP Location."
9. A "Restart Needed" page will come up. Click "Restart"
C. Disconnect the modem from the computer and put it into the Internet port on the router. Reconnect your computer to the router and restart the router and computer.
D. Log into your router and change the main setup from "obtain IP address automatically" to "PPPoE" - and enter the full username (user@sbcglobal.net or whatever domain they assigned you) and password. You should be in business. Set up your email account in whatever client you prefer, the servers *should* be pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com and smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com - unless they have changed that recently too. You can log into the web interface for email and account management at http://sbc.yahoo.com.

GLC, you're a lifesaver. Now they just need to clean up my line - I've been using my cell for the last few years. Went to use the new phone I purchased and nothing but dead air. I'm assuming when I call them tomorrow they'll tell me it's something in the home's wiring - which it's not since I've checked, re-checked and triple checked them. But I'm sure in the end ATT will clear this up.

Hijack here!
Hi glc, will the same instructions work with a HomePortal 1000HG?
Nope. The 2Wire is a full multiclient router with wireless capabilities. The Speedstream 4100 has router capabilities, but only single client (one at a time). It's best just dumping a 4100 into bridge mode and using a Linksys for a home network. If you have a 2Wire, you can do everything you need within its setup.

Well the SBC DSL is up and running I tryed the CD it didn't work so I called and they walked me though it. I have a Linksys wireless router and I just plugged it in and hooked everything up and the laptop is running great. Thanks for eveyine's help and I don't think I made a mistake it's running better and fatser than the Roadrunning.
The CD only works if the modem is connected directly to a computer - it will not work through a 3rd party router.
