so you want to play games with only headphones?
have you tried plugging headphones into the output on the back of your computer? (i know, might seem obvious, but you've not specified what you have/haven't been trying for the past six years!)
the headphone socket on your CD-ROM drive is for the audio from CDs in that drive only, the socket is totally independent of the computer.

The headphone jack on your cd rom will not mute the speakers. The only thing it does is play the music on a cd in the drive. You will need to connect the jack to the soundcard or to your speakers if they have such a jack. That grey wire you see is for digital audio form the cd drive and isnt even needed any more. The ide cable will handle all the digital output from the drive. If your soundcard (specs would help) doesnt have a headphone jack and your speakers do not have one then you will have to plug the headphones into the speaker jack.

You can go to a place like Radioshack, or anywhere that sells basic audio equipment and buy an extension cord for your headphones. I bought one so I could use my headphones at LAN parties.

Reminds me of the pair of old headphones I have that have a 16ft cord. To say the least it's long enough to allow me to listen on the clear other end of the room.

The Mcgyver approach I love it.
Also, in order for the headphone jack on the CD drive to work with audio CD's, an analog audio cable must be connected from the drive to the sound card jack. Don't ask me why, but this is how it is. That's what that gray wire is you see.
