I want to get another drive and was wondering if anyone has opinions on seagate drives and
in particular the newest 7200.10 version.

Seagate are making top quality drives at the moment, with long warranties. Haven't heard of any problems with the latest versions.

I dont trust the perpendicular recording technology just yet. I prefer to wait just a bit to make sure we don't have another Deathstar on our hands.

Could perpendicular recording be more marketing hype than a true technology?

Not at all - it's a whole new technology. It's increasing platter density several times. Everyone will be using it eventually. With its adoption, we will be seeing terabyte drives by the end of the year.

The concept of perpendicular recording came about in the '70, and Seagate was one of the manufacturers working on the idea. In the '80, even floppies were experimented with, but until recently, manufacturing and reliability issues got in the way. The first wave of newer drives (Hitachi ? or Toshiba?) had issues from what I hear. All said, I'm with glc as far as waiting for the bugs to be worked out. Once they become reliable, it'll be great for consumers.

If you need a drive right now, I'd probably get a 7200.9 or a 16mb cache WD.

As usual i could not resist the temptation of 320G for so little money so I ordered the 7200.10(in spite of the new technology) with the 16m buffer. I fugure i can't go wrong with a 5 year warranty.

Received the drive after a couple of days of placing the order.
Installed and partitioned the drive with no problems whatsoever.
So far I am pleased with it.

I only hope the technology is reliable.
