CD Auto Insert Inop...

This is an older machine but has a fresh ME install over Win 98.1. When inserting CDs, Windows Explorer will recognize them but the CD will not perform whatever it is suppose to do: meaning if it's an audio CD, it doesn't play; if it's a program disk, it won't Autorun, and so on.

Yes, Auto Insert is turned on. I've tried multiple drives, no difference. The few articles I could find at MS's KB haven't worked. I'm sure it's a simple registry hack, but I don't know the "secret."

All CDs / DVDs work if you manually start the operation. So, for music CDs, if I start the Player or MWP, they'll play, Auto run work if manually selected. Read / write funtions on CD and DVD RWs work just fine.

There's a Registry value that prevents autorun on certain drive types. A number of readers have reported autorun problems in Windows Me. The cause? Erroneous data in this Registry value disabled autorun for all drive types.

To fix the problem, launch Regedit and navigate to the key
HKEY_ CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer.

In the right-hand pane, double-click the value named NoDriveTypeAutoRun. Its data probably reads FF 00 00 00. Delete those four numbers and enter 95 00 00 00, then click OK. You may need to restart Windows Me, but the autorun feature for your CD-ROM drive will be enabled.

P.S. [Generally, the DVD/CD burning software *theoretically* should only disable autorun while you have a DVD/CD recording project open -- it's *supposed* to re-enable it when you exit the software ... but, like glc mentions, such software can misbehave]

Hi GaryRouth. Yes, that value is set correctly. I even "changed" to the sugested value and still no joy.

Hi glc. I double checked, and it's still enabled.

Now for the update. It's kinda working. I swapped out the older TNT vid card and put in a "newer" ATI 7000 I had laying around. Now ATI's DVD player will start automatically when a disc is inserted.

For music CDs it still didn't work but then I tried Roxio's player and it stated it wasn't the default player, and I picked Yes to make it so. Now, the player fires up automatically when a music CD is put in.

Haven't tried a program disc yet, but I'll do that today.
