I finally got all the parts together and the thing boots up and i can go into the BIOS and everything. I set the primary and secondary drives. I am running one SATA HD and the mb recognizes it. I put in the windows xp install cd and it goes into the blue windows set up screen and proceeds to load a lot of stuff. All of a sudden when it says windows is starting at the bottom the thing crashes and brings up an error screen saying check the hard drives if you have a new one.

I'm running an Asus P5WD2 MB with a Pentium D 940, 2 GB of RAM, Maxtor SATA300 HD. Let me know if you have any advice. I shouldn't have to load anything on the mb to make it compatible or whatever with SATA according to ASUS tech support. Any help much appreciated.

Here is the exact message: "Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. if this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen appears again, follow these steps. Check for iruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive and make sure it is properly configured and terminated. CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer.

How is it that you set the primary and secondary drives? SATA drives don't need to be jumpered, if that's something you're trying to do.

I'd install XP with only the one HDD hooked up. You can add all the other stuff, like optical and hard drives, afterwards.

i figured it out. i needed to update the drivers for the hard drive because the ones that come on the windows cd with sp 2 were outdated. i had to hunt around for a floppy drive and install the drivers but it seems to be working now. thanks

I'm surprised ASUS Tech Support didn't cover making sure the SATA drivers were installed. They're usually better than that. Glad it's working for you.
