hello, i will be getting the ASUS P5P800-VM LGA 775 mobo pretty soon. before starting up a new system i was wondering if it is necessary to change the bios configuration jumper block to the 2-3 configure position, start the computer and clear the bios, reset the system clock, shutdown and then change the jumper back to 1-2 normal mode in order to begin using the system. also, i would like to know if certain channel connections of a sata hard drive and optical drive would effect the system. for example, can i connect the hard drive to the first sata channel and my cd-rom to the first ide channel? In the pc book i am following they connect the hard drive to sata 0, and the optical drive(master) to the secondary ide channel so that windows is not confused. anyways, in the book i am reading they work with an intel 478 socket motherboard which i think is the reason they do some of these steps

There is no need to clear the cmos on a new mobo, as its already cleared. If u really want to sure.
And ya do as the manual says. There shouldnt be a problem *i think* with making the ide optical master. Just experiment until you get a setting that does.

change the bios configuration jumper block to the 2-3 configure position, start the computer and clear the bios, reset the system clock, shutdown and then change the jumper back to 1-2 normal mode in order to begin using the system.
Do that and you will blow the BIOS/CMOS chip and maybe even damage the rest of the motherboard, I usually reset the BIOS on every new board I fit. In order to flash the BIOS you must make sure the computer is not plugged into the wall socket, if you want to be really safe it is a good idea to wait five minutes for some of the stored voltage within the PSU to dissipate or actually unplug the PSU from the motherboard, now you can move the jumper from 1-2 to 2-3 and wait five to ten seconds and the BIOS chip information will be cleared, now move the jumper back to 1-2 and the CMOS will rewrite basic startup information to the BIOS chip.
