Hi, I need help with my newly built PC.
On my old PC I did some part-swapping with other computers and upgrading with new parts and when I turned on my computer all that was shown was a black screen so I returned all my old parts to my PC and still all that was shown was a Black screen. I decided to move onto a different computer that is a Pentium III. It already had everything except RAM, a fan and a harddrive. I added the ram, a fan and put my old harddrive inside it and still all that was shown was a black screen.
I figured it was something wrong with my ram or my Harddrive so I decided to test it, it put the ram and harddrive in a working computer and everything worked.
I went back to the first computer that I got the black screen with and swapped the P3 motherboard with a P4 motherboard and put all the parts into it and got a Powersupply that is required for P4 computers. When I turned the computer on I got that same black screen on the monitor... Nothing shows up on the screen.. no words just black.. I really dont get this
To just make sure if it was the parts that were mal-funtioning I put all the parts I had into that working computer and It all worked so Ive narrowed it down to the 3 Motherboards, 2 are old and the P4 one is brand new... Im not sure if my motherboards all are dead or something but 1 worked before I upgraded it, 1 was inside a unused computer for months and 1 was brand new... I got 1 other brand new P4 motherboard but just incase im killing all my mother boards im not going to put it in... well I cant anyways it seems to require a different sized CPU than the other P4 computers have
I really really need help... this is driving me crazy
The Parts I have are:
Pentium III DDR 266 Mother board
Pentium III AOpen Mother board
Pentium IV AOpen Motherboard (Came with 600MHz cpu)
0.8 GHz AMD CPU (P3)
1.2 GHz AMD CPU (P3)
1.3 GHz Intel Celeron CPU (P4)
500mb ram
D-Link Air DWL-500 Wireless PCI Adapter
GeForce 2 MX 400 (64mb)
Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 (128mb)
20GB Harddrive
40GB Harddrive

and just so you know
P3/P4 = Pentium III/Pentium IV
Let's get exact part numbers on EVERYTHING, please - processors, motherboard, ram modules, the works. I haven't a clue what you have there, and I suspect you don't either.

i dont really have a clue but i got the boxes for most of that.. ill take a look

well do the parts really matter because they all work, they all worked before and Ive tested them in other working computers and they all work??
Anyways heres what I could find
AMD Motherboard DDR 266 PC 2100
AMD 1.2GHz CPU
AMD 2.2GHz CPU
AMD 800MHz CPU
AOpen MX34 Motherboard
AOpen MK33 Motherboard
Intel(R) Celeron(TM) CPU 1300 MHz
Quantum Fireball CX Harddrive
Maxtor 33073h3 Harddrive
and the Ram is inside this computer right now
any help?
oh and the 1.2GHz CPU my dad told me once that its half-burnt out and requires a bigger faster fan to keep it cool
I dont know much about parts and stuff but I dont think its the parts that are mal-funtioning it just doesnt show any works or anything when I boot the computer up its just a black-screen
Ill get my dad to take a look at it when he can 'cause he know alot about computers and he can probably fix this

Also I took alook at my other post glc and I actually do have a 600mhz p4 strangly. When I put it in the other computer to test it like I tested everything else I did right click on my computer and then properties and it said 600MHz
And I dont think that the 2.2 GHz CPU is 2.2 It may be more 2.2 may be all that the motherboard can handle because I have a 1.2 GHz CPU but in my old Motherboard it only shows up as 901MHz
Well I dont think Ill get much help here because Im really confused and its confusing everyone else... I guess the only way I can get help is if someone could actually see all my parts... So im just going to get my dad to look at it, if not ill bring it into a shop.
What you need to do is clean the heatsink compound off all those processors and read the numbers off the processors. We can work with the two AOpen motherboards - those are the model numbers. The other motherboard, we still need a model number.
You don't have Pentium 3's or Pentium 4's there - you have AMD processors and a Celeron. The Celeron is Pentium 3-based.

I'm sorry, but I've had this problem before, make sure that your power supply is compatibale with the motherboard(IE power supply=ATX and your motherboard=ATX)
(sorry if this is against the rules, but i've really had this problem before.)

the powersupply wasnt the problem I figured it out. On my MX34 board the jumpers werent set to celeron CPU so i fixed that and the computer turned on and beeped... but it beeped constantly so the board was dead
The MK33 board I couldnt get to post
The DDR266 board was just messed, im not sure what was wrong but it made a strange humming noise, well not the board but the 1.8 AMD Chip! so in a panic I turned it off and im just not gonna bother with it
Im just going to start new with this brand new P4 board my dad gave me, all i need is a chip and a fan
Constant beeps is not a dead board - that's usually missing, incompatible, or defective ram.
Now - your dad gave you a new board. You want advice on what to buy for a processor and fan. WHAT IS THE BOARD MODEL NUMBER? Do you have compatible ram for it?
If you are going to successfully build a computer, you must pay a lot more attention to detail than you are now and effectively communicate with those trying to advise you.

All the ram works perfectly and I checked, it was compatable with the board, I think its just a dead board (CPU is also fine)
Box says.. ECS Elitegroup P4 Mainboard P4VXMS
board says... Intel desktop Board D845GRG
SN... AZRG23004534 AA AB4341-301

Okay - a D845GRG is a good Socket 478 board. You will need PC2100 or faster DDR ram for it. It will accept Willamette and Northwood core Pentium 4's, either 400 or 533 FSB, up to 2.8 GHz - and Willamette or Northwood core Celerons up to 2.6 GHz. It will NOT accept 800 FSB P4's, Prescott cores, or Celeron D's. Look for a retail boxed processor, it will come with a heatsink/fan. The major online vendors will no longer have any of these processors.
Checking one of my usual secondary market vendors, this would be a good bet.

This would be an okay heatsink/fan for it:
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=FAN478-DT&cat=FAN
You may need some heatsink compound - I don't know if this one comes with a thermal pad or a packet of compound.

I think we got some thermal pads and paste here. I got this silvery thin patch thats on top of another computer p4 cpu and I got a few more of these in a box, these are thermal pads right?

so if i buy this cpu it will work in this board right?
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=P42660B478&cat=CPU
should I get extra ram and use the built-in video card and sound card, or should I just use one of my other video cards and sound cards?
I was looking at that fan and it says it only ships within US, doesnt ship internationaly or COD, any others I can get off that site?

Try Inte (http://www.shop-intel.com/shop/category.asp?category_id=116&iid=referrer+wtb_replacement_dpheat&)l, I believe that they ship to Canada. Or try NCIX (http://www.ncix.com/), it's in Canada.

This is what Ive chosen, will this all work with my D845GRG P4 Board??:
CP2-CID-350 C :: Intel Celeron D 350 3.20GHz / 256KB Cache / 533 FSB / OEM / Socket 478 / Processor
E83-1002 P :: Ultra Silver Thermal Compound (1.0g)
U93-1902 :: US Modular 256MB PC2100 DDR 266MHz (2 Chips)
ULT31422 :: Ultra / Socket 478 / Intel Pentium 4 up to 3.4GHz / Ball Bearing / Copper Core / CPU Cooling Fan
T13-1072 :: Coolmax / V-400 / 400-Watt / ATX / 80mm Fan / SATA-Ready / 20/24-Pin / Power Supply
THD-40M R :: Maxtor DiamondMax D540X / 40GB / EIDE / 5400 / 2MB / ATA-100 / OEM / Refurbished Hard Drive
This is all the Cheapest stuff that I think works with my board
No, I specifically said in my last post that you can NOT use a Celeron-D in that board.
Coolmax power supplies are garbage. Offbrand ram is risky. That's a bad hard drive. You cannot be so cheap if you want something that works right.
Geeks.com does ship to Canada. I would buy the processor and heatsink from them (the ones I linked to) as NCIX does not have any compatible processors (and the NCIX prices for S-478 heatsinks are ridiculous) - then I'd get the following from NCIX:
PO350-GUS SPARKLE POWER Q 350W ATX POWER SUPPLY P4 READY 80MM FAN 15A 12V In Stock $32.25
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=12389&vpn=PO350-GUS&manufacture=Sparkle%20Power%20Intl.
INFINEON Infineon 512MB PC2700 DDR333 184PIN OEM In Stock $59.34 (1 stick, pair not necessary, that's not a dual channel board)
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=9147&vpn=INFINEON&manufacture=RAM
ST3802110A Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 80GB ATA100 7200RPM 2MB 8.5MS Hard Drive OEM RoHS 5YEAR MFR Warranty In Stock $67.91
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=16399&vpn=ST3802110A&manufacture=Seagate
You can use your sound card and video card if you want. The video card must be a 4x or 8x AGP, the older 1x and 2x cards are not compatible with that board.

OK, this is what Ive chosen now
Intel P4 2.66GHz 533MHz 512KB Socket 478 CPU (The One you recommended)
ULT30215 :: Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz CL3 Memory
ULT31424 :: Ultra / Socket / 478 / Intel Pentium 4 up to 3.06GHz / Ball Bearing / CPU Cooling Fan
ULT31839 :: Ultra / V-Series / 350-Watt / ATX / 120mm Fan / 20/24-Pin / SATA Ready / Power Supply
E83-1002 P :: Ultra Silver Thermal Compound (1.0g)
THD-80M2 P :: Maxtor / 80GB / 7200 / 2MB / ATA-133 / EIDE / OEM / Hard Drive
Ive chosen the Ultra stuff because I have Ultra stuff here and it seems to work good and it comes with 3 year warrenty and up to lifetime warrenty if I register at Ultra site.
Ive Chosen the Maxtor Harddrive because all my hard drives here that havent crapped-out on me are the Maxtors.
If this is all Garbage, ill go with what you've recommended, or maybe ill just buy a bare-bone kit and keep the P4 i have here boxed up.
All this is about $270 CAN without taxes or shipping fees

Will Ultra PC3200 DDR ram work, theyre on sale for 49.99$?
You are buying garbage again - stay out of Tiger Direct.

PC3200 DDR will work, but do NOT buy Ultra products. They have a reputation for poor quality, regardless of your experience with them in the past. Buying a quality brand means the difference between headaches and a smooth build.
I would definitely change that power supply. That is never something to buy cheaply. The Sparkle that glc linked to earlier is a perfect fit and is very good quality.

Ok it doesnt matter that its cheap now, im working now and Im going to make enough money for good parts
