Power supply issue

Hello,
I am not sure if this goes here or under case.
I think my power supply may be dead but i am not sure. Here is my back story. My computer started acting very slugglish today and crashed soon after. Upon reboot i found that Windows could no longer find the CD rom and DVD rom. I checked into the BIOS and found they no longer saw the drives either. I opeed up my case and checked all the connections. Upon trying to reboot i found it would no longer boot. The small green light on the mtherboard was no longer on either. My first reaction is my power supply died today. My power supply is an UltraX 500watt. I know they have a bad rep but i bought it before I found this out.
My specs are:
Intel P4 3.0ht
ATI x800xt
1gb DDR-Ram
Intel D865PERL motherboard

I lack a second supply to test the computer with. If the Power supply is dead, does anyone has a suggestion on a new modular power supply?

I would prefer it to be but doesnt have to. I like the modular for the cable management.

For the specs you listed you don't need another 500 watt PSU, a good quality 400 watt PSU will do. I prefer to use Fortron Source or Sparkle Power power supplies but I don't know off-hand if they make any modular units.

The modular was a preference, not a requirement. The 500 watt I knew I did not need, it was just how the supply came. Can you name a good unit for the price?

All you need is a 20 pin unit for that motherboard - you should really try to borrow one for testing purposes before buying one. Your problem may be some other component such as the motherboard.

Finally, the 20 pin-only units are going away so if you buy a new one, get a 20+4 for forward and backward compatibility.

Right, just leave them unconnected for a motherboard with a 20pin.

So the pins just go over the edge of the connector? IF this is so, I may have a problem with the 20+4 pins connectors. I have a small componant placed next to the Power port with would most likely block the pins.

The extra four pins are not a part of the 20pin connection. They are seperated from the connector entirely. By "hang out of the way", I meant you can put them anywhere. :)

:D Well then i feel a litte dumb, not the first time so o well. I managed to get a friend to lend me a power supply. The computer booted right up. I will be ordered one in the morning, more than liekyl the one you recomended. Thank you again.

On a 20+4, the extra 4 pins are detachable from the connector so you can let it hang.
