O/S install problem

I recently had a problem when booting my pc. It took 4 or 5 attempts, (each time the process would advance slightly) for it to run windows xp pro. Eventually I got fed up with this and decided to format my hard drive and reinstall the O/S. Now it won't install. it gets so far before restarting.
I ran a system check using PC beginners and got a warning that my cpu was NOT in V86 mode.
Would this affect an install? and if so what can I do about it?

Please post your system specs. Have you done a memory test using something like DocMemory (http://www.simmtester.com/page/products/doc/docinfo.asp)?

What about hard drive diags? I'd do the memory test as Dr G suggested above first, but a hard drive on the fritz would give you problems. Do you get any errors during installation/after, etc? So the PC is just restarting in the middle of installation? How long have you had it?
