A simple question about dual core processors!

When a processors states it is a dual core and run and 3.4 gigahertz does that mean the both processors run at 3.4 to make 6.8 or does it mean that combined the two processors run at 3.4??

plz help me i have been fighting with my friend about this and need some answers THX

The cores run at 3.4 GHz, but 2 cores running at 3.4 GHz does not equal to a single core running at 6.8 GHz.

It mainly improves multitasking performance due to the independent cores. It does also improve the overall performance, but not as much as doubling it.

no, each core is not running at 1.7ghz. The cpu runs at 3.4ghz. Its like having 2 cpus in one.

If you have 2 cups running at 1.7ghz on a motherboard they each run at 1.7 ghz. Not at 3.4ghz

ok now im really confuzed so according u since each core runs at 3.4 and there is two cores then the total computer is running at 6.8 if u add the two CPUs togeter

IF you add them together. . ;)
But CPU power does not add together. . that's not the way it works. You can't just add CPU power together. 2 cores at 3.4 GHz does not mean that dual core CPU is as fast as a single core 6.8 GHz CPU would be, it's not that easy.

The overall performance of a dual core 3.4 GHz is somewhere in between 3.4 GHz and 6.8 GHz. Depends on the applications, etc.

That is not right. To make you understand, think of it this way. You have a dual core prossessor wich runs at 3.4 gigahertz. Dual core mean there is two cpu's so its like having two prossesors. Each core runs at 3.4 gigahertz. They dont add up. It would be impossible to get 6.8 gigahertz u cant put two prosessors together. Just that... when your using both prossesors at the same time(wich is for multi tasking) you'll see your computer mostlikly inresse in speed because the tasks your doing is spit between two prossesors. For exaple you watching a movie, playing music and stuff and your playing a game at the same time. What they meant about the two prossesors working between 3.4 and 6.8 ghz is that instead of having one prossesor working at 6.8 ghz doing all the work, you have two 3.4 ghz prossesor spliting the job like i mentioned.
