View Full Version : Stupid question
Does anyone have any idea on how to boot to safe mode on an ASUS A8N-E mobo? It is NOT the F8 key, as all this does is take you to the boot menu, which only allows you to select boot order, not boot mode. I've tried everything and can't figure it out, and the manual is, shall we say, useless. I can do it by running msconfig, but there MUST be some way to do it without doing that, otherwise how would you do it in the event of a problem? Any help would be appreciated.

If you're running XP, you hit F8 after the computer posts. If you hit it while it's posting, it'll take you to the boot menu. Hit it a split second afterwards. It's a very small window of time that you have to hit it.
It's not a matter of the mobo, it's Windows itself. Therefore, it's always F8.
But, as said, hitting it too early will bring you to the boot order.
Now when you select to boot from your hard drive and right thereafter press F8, you will get the screen with the option to boot into safe mode.

There's an ugly way of doing it too - interrupt the bootup by powering the machine off after you see the XP splash screen but before Windows actually starts. Then when you power back up, it should apologize for an incomplete startup and give you the safe mode option. I would NOT recommend this if you are running FAT32 but NTFS can usually handle this kind of abuse okay.
