MS Word

All,

I have been experiencing problems with windows. Every time I envoke MS Word I can type for about 3 minutes and then the system crashes. Now when I try to print it also crashes...I get a black screen and then the system reboots on it's own. I am using MS 2002 with XP. Anyone know what I can do? Can I reload windows over windows? or is that not a good idea?

I see you have a home build, so yes, you can do a repair install of XP.
But your first try should your last working System Restore point.

Yes it's a home build. When you say repair install of XP, do you mean XP or Word?

I was thinking of reloading MS Word only?

You can reinstall just Word; I would try that first.

If that doesn't work, then you can do a repair install of Windows.

If all else fails, change to Open Office!

Should I un -install first and then re-install or just re-install over the old word?

Copy your Word files to some other location if you don't have back ups already.
I take it you've already tried System Restore?
So first I would uninstall Word and run a registry cleaner, we like CCleaner : http://www.ccleaner.com/
Now re-install Word.

Depending on your version of Word, you may have a repair option available there too. I know with Office 2003 when you use add/remove programs, you can uninstall, *reinstall*, or add/remove components. Reinstall is a esssentially a repair, original media required.

Try removing your printer and see if you get the same error on accessing Word. It could be a printer driver issue that is causing the problem. If removing the printer works, go out and find the latest version of the printer driver and installing it.

To test the printer theory, change your default printer - unless there are NO other printers installed. You can use the fax driver or the MS document printer or whatever else you find in there as a default for this test.

these viruses could make your system reboot at it's own. Update your AntiVirus and perform scanning.

If no viruses found, look your USB peripheral. Do you use a port USB with more than one hardware. If you do, uninstall them. An USB port if used by morethan one hardware can caused a crash

Some of the early Service Packs of Word 2000 were horrible. Do you have the latest updates? If corrupted, then you have to do a reinstall.
