I have ZA pro, and AVG free running, and in the last month or so I have been getting a Zone Alarm alert (see attachment), saying AVG is attempting to change network settings.

I usually "Deny" the change, but there is no option to "Remember" this in the ZA alert. The alert returns...sometimes several times a day. I believe (not positive) that I even "Allow" the alert once, to get rid of the alert.

Ideas???

The host file can be used to block bad sites that place cookies/cause pop ups etc on your machine...I would "always" allow. Or better yet, turn off ZA's notification. It'll drive you nuts looking at all the things getting blocked.

Wait a minute - AVG should not be trying to modify your hosts file unless there's a problem in there. Open yours up and see what entries are in there.

Where do I go to open the host file?

The pic you posted shows where the host file is.

If you have a copy of HijackThis, it has a basic hosts file manager. That's sometimes easier than trying to find it and getting it to open in Notepad.

"windrvdir" is usually c:\windows\system32\drivers.

I made the setting change in ZA, and it apears that has taked care of the nag.

I used HiJacck This to look at my host file, & here it is:# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhostI am wondering why it says in it is a sample host file.

That is in fact a standard hosts file. There are no additional entries from the default.

The setting change in ZA seemed to take care of the nag.

Thanks glc for the heads up on the host file.
