video conversion

i have a movie in DVD format. the disc contains VOB files and .BUP and .IFO files (inside a Video_TS folder).
the movie plays fine on a dvd player in israel but here in vancouver the player displays an error message (just "error").
the file system is UDF.

could this be due to ntsc/pal discrepancy?
how can i get it to work here?
how can i convert it to avi format so that i can store it on my computer?

I never paid attention to it before, so I checked a couple of my homemade DVDs and their file system is CDFS. Not really know if it makes a diff or not. If you have editing software, or a DVD authoring tool, you can import the VOBs, which are the movie files, and then recode or reauthor them to a new disk. Some will let you import the chapter / menu info, too, but I've not messed with that.

That would be my first guess. Usually a DVD player should display something that informs about a TV system mismatch. Since you say yours doesn't, I'd try it in a different DVD player, maybe it will give a more detailed error message.

Is it a self-made DVD or a store bought ? If store bought, then the region code might have a hand in this. Again, I'd test this DVD in another DVD and hope for a more detailed error message.
If it's a self-made DVD, maybe your player can't handle the type of DVD. . . maybe it's a DVD-R and the player supports only DVD+R or vice versa. It would also be helpful to know how that DVD was made, if it is indeed self-made.

The file system defined for DVD-Video is UDF 1.02. Every DVD player can handle it (that's what they are made for).
Usually DVDs will have a combination of ISO and UDF (called UDFbridge).

Otherwise, it might (and won't) play in many DVD players (for example, that was one of the biggest problems with the early Nero 6. It burned Video DVD with UDF 1.5 instead of 1.02. . many players couldn't handle it).


You probably have the UDF 1.02 on your DVD as well. You can check with ISOBuster, it displays all file systems on that DVD.

it's a dvd with the video of my wedding (congratulations to me).
the dvd was made by the video guy and it's on a -r disc.
i've copied it onto a -r disc.

i'll try to play it in a different dvd player.
