I'm a newB and I need your help.

I recently downloaded a video file. It looked like a .WMV file but when I tried to play it, the codec wasn't there. The filename includes "Xvid-DVD rip" but it won't work with DivX or anything else. I've tried all my players and I get nothing. Either i'm told it's not a real .avi or mpeg-4 or the format is not supported.

I even tried Gspot and it wouldn't even render. (not sure what that even means)

I uninstalled then reinstalled DivX and it still won't work.

Is there something wrong?

If it won't render in Gspot it's probably a corrupted file.

If it is corrupted (and I was thinking along those lines) what can I do?

Can it be repaired? Or should I just cut my losses and delete the thing?

Not trying to be a smartaleck, but if you are downloading copyrighted material using peer to peer, what you see is not always what you get. Perhaps what you are doing is legal, but I sorta doubt it. I'd delete it and move on.

Wait, before you do that.. try one more thing.

Download the VideoLAN Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/), it doesn't use codecs.

If that doesn't work (and it usually does), download the Matroska Pack from here (packs.matroska.org).

XviD is similar tp DivX... though I don't know of a place to download just that codec...
