7900gt or 7900gtx

Hey guys...well im going to buid a gaming machine in september, and im still a little curious to know the difference between the 7900gt and gtx

if i would get the 7900gt, i would get the evga superclocked for about $300
if i would get the 7900gtx, i would prolly get the bfg one or the other evga for about $440

i havent been able to find any recent reviews comparing both of them, beause im trying to see if the gtx is worth $140 more to spend

i know within the year i build it, i will upgrade the same card for sli hopefully

so is the gtx worth the extra money? or am i better off saving the cash for possibly another 7900gt for the future?

Well if I had the kinda money to consider the gtx and wanted to go sli.

Why spend more money then you need to spend? I would just spend a few bucks above the gtx and get this

It will outperform 2 7900gt's in sli vs. 1 of these. Not only that, you wont have to worry about having a extra beefy powersupply for those 2 cards, as this one takes less power. Nor will you need a sli motherboard.

That's no reason to skimp on power supply - it *is* two cards, albeit slowed down. Personally, I'd go with the 7900GTX. All depends on how much you are willing to spend.

I would go for the 7900gt personally, out of those two cards. Google or look around on different forums for the volt mod for the 7900gt, most people are easily able to get gtx speeds with an aftermarket cooler. All you need is a conductive pen and a new hs/f.

The new 7950 looks pretty hot too, just think if you had two, you could have quad sli! But it's rather pricy. Two volt modded 7900gt's will out perform a single stock 7950. Also, be sure to get a good psu, as has been mentioned, if it goes bad it may just take those gfx cards (and who knows what else) with it. Choice is yours though. :cool:

as for the gx2, i considered it, then i said i had to stick to my budget, that card is twice the amount of money of what i could originally spend..and if i do sli in the future, it will be much cheaper to get the other 7900gt

my psu i picked out is the 550w antec truepower truecontrol thingy :)

Doesn't seem like it would be any cheaper...once you factor in the HSF and trouble (and any tools)...

The PSU is a good choice. I'd just go with what the budget allows.

I dont think the op is really interested in volt modding and nor would I suggest it.

And even if your going to volt mod, do it right and do it permanently with a little solder and a pot.


If your not going for the gx2 then I suggest the gt.

And fyi, a single gx2 runs with the same power or less (differing with idle and load) then a ati X1900XT

well i thought about the gx2, and i thought its a great card for now and to upgrade maybe a year later, but then i figure if i upgrade a year later or so, dx10 will be out

so if i buy a 7900gt now and maybe a few months later another one, ill use it until id want to upgrade, and upgrade to a dx10 card

what do you think?

Just bear in mind. DX10 is being severly overhyped. Yes cards which support it will come out soon. But by the time games that actually use dx10 to its full potential (I said full potential, not just a few little bells and whistles) your card will be considered ancient. Not to mention the bugs that will be out with this new generation.

All your choice really. We can onlys wait and see to what dx10 will bring. By the time real games *fully* supporting dx10 will be out, you will have to yet upgrade again to keep up.

i realize the change in impact, but i know that a cpu can bottleneck a video card

i dont know how well dual core does in games right now, especially the 4800+ but with a card like the gx2, i was just wondering if the cpu isnt up to par

CPU will be fine...the only time you'll have a CPU bottleneck is if you are running the game at low settings (but you'd have high FPS anyway). Or have an AI intesive game...but the 4800+ X2 is very powerful.

You should do ok with the 4800. Nowadays until conroe, almost all cpu's are bottlenecking cards to some extent nowadays. Its just the way its been. Hopefully this is changing with conroe. GPU's are actually bottlenecking it.

Nonetheless, that 4800x2 is a powerhouse, you should be more then happy with it.
