The WOW guys have regular free trial periods, usually for 10 days, but you download the client.
What I think you've got is the more usual buy the game and you're not charged for the first month which is standard for boxed versions.
In effect if you play for a year you're charged for 11 months, not 12.
It makes sense only if you use a credit card to sign up with and cancel just before the month is up if you don't want to continue. In that case your card isn't charged.
With a prepaid card you're committed for 2 months since, as far as I know, they won't refund the unused portion.
Oh, no one was trying to rip you off but you did mis-understand and yes they could have been clearer.

You still have to enter a credit card to set up an account, however, your first month won't charge the card. You still get a free month, but it's a technicality that they fail to mention. Hopefully you trust them with your card info.

You need a credit card or a game card to make an account.
So if you don't have a credit card,
Yes.
You need to buy a game card.
It doesn't really make sense.. but that's how business is done in the MMO world.
