I just booted my new build for the first time and after installing Windows, the safely remove hardware icon appeared and it listed my hard drive. What exactly does this mean? Is there something wrong with it?

Hi,

the safely remove hardware icon appeared and it listed my hard drive. What exactly does this mean?

It means that if you wish to disconnect the hard drive, you should select it from safely remove hardware first, so that all transfers to and from the hard drive will cease, in order to prevent data loss upon disconnection.

Is there something wrong with it?

No. It's the normal way. The safely remove hardware icon appears if you have any storage device (such as hard drives, usb sticks, digital cameras, etc. etc. etc.) connected to a port which is hot-pluggable (USB, firewire, SATA), no matter whether it's internal or external.

yellowsnow - I was wondering the exact same thing when I first installed a SATA drive into my PC.

As RJ says its so that you can hotplug the drive (pull it out without turning the computer off - not when it contains the OS though!!!)

I personally wish I could stop the icon from appearing for my primary drive because I cant see that theres any reason to hotplug it anyway.

Is it possible to stop the icon from appearing?

Nope. As long as you have a SATA hdd installed that icon will appear. You can hide it however. Right click the task bar>properties>check the Hide inactive icons>click Customize and select Always hide for the safe to remove hardware icon.
