Help with internet sharing

I have connected two computers in my home with a network crossover cable. File sharing and running programs between the two computers works great, but I can’t connect to the internet with one of the computers. The computer that has the internet connection (the internet connection is a DSL router connected to a NIC in the computer I called MAIN PC) works fine, but the computer (I named the GAMER PC) that is connected to the MAIN PC through a NIC in the MAIN PC will not connect to the internet. How do I share the internet connection from the MAIN PC with the GAMER PC? Thanks for any help.

Firsty I would check that the firewall on both computers are allowing internet sharing between the two machines.

How did you set up the connection between the two machines? Did you use the Wizzard to set it up or just go with the defaults?

When you run the Wizzard you are offered the possibility to identify how the ICS is set up.

I used the MS Wizard to set up the connection between the two computers, and the connection works good for program and file sharing, but not the internet sharing.

When you did the Wizzard it would have asked you to choose the Internet Connection you are using on the MAIN PC...did you deffinatly pick the correct option.

I know that I have in the past chosen the incorrect NIC as the internet connection (not concentrating) and I didnt get a net connection on the other pc (your GAMER PC).

Did you check that the firewall is not blocking the internet connection?

I may have left the firewall on and I'll check to make sure that I selected the correct NIC. Thanks for the help.

Why are you connecting it that way? Just connect both computers to the router.

I guess it's actually a modem that is being used as opposed to a router!?

I think the DSL modem/router only has one NIC connection. I rechecked everything and the Gamer PC can access all the needed files on the Main PC, but the Gamer PC still cannot connect to the internet through the Main PC. I'll check and see if the modem/router has any additional NIC connections.

If it is in fact a ROUTER that is capable of assigning multiple local IP addresses, all you need to do is connect it and the computers to a SWITCH.

What is the exact brand and model of this DSL device? Who is your DSL provider?

The DSL is a Comtrend Model CT-507. According to the specs It has one 10/100 Ethernet Interface and one ADSL line interface to access the Internet. Any ideas how to make one PC share the the intenet connection? I've followed the steps in the MS Wizard as far as I know, but no luck so far. Thanks.

That's a router. Connect it to a switch and connect both computers to the switch. Run the network wizard and tell it the computers are connected to the Internet through a gateway.
