Hey all. I recently posted and described a problem in which I hooked up a hub and suddenly my internet stopped working. I was unable to release my ip address through ipconfig and could not access my router through my browser. I couldn't send or receive packets. Then I had an odd little thing in which my LAC icon in my system tray started to go ballistic on me, rapidly popping back and forth between a "cable is unplugged" bubble and a "connection is good" bubble. In addition, while I was trying to figure this all out, I noticed a slowdown in system performance.

So I had the cable company tech guy out to check the modem. It turned out that the modem, when connected to anybody's computer but mine, did work. Oops. So here's another voice to the chorus of "nVidia on-board NICs don't work very well". (I had considered that, but dismissed it because it had been working up until I started fooling around with the hardware.) It turned out that in taking itself down, it also managed to somehow fry the router. (Don't ask me how, but it just isn't working anymore.) Now that I have a USB ethernet port temporarily, my system performance is back to normal. So if you ever run into a problem where your connection doesn't seem to know what it's doing, you've checked the components and cables, and you can't release the ip address, don't assume the modem - double-check the NIC too.
