Hi,

I am upgrading a Dell Dimension 8250, and i find the Memory is Rambus which would cost more to purchase 2 x 256mb than to replacing the Motherboard, CPU with DDR Memory.

The only thing I would like to know and then i can obtain the correct Motherboard is the CPU in this Dell machine a Socket 775 or S478 it says in documentation 3.05 ghz Pentium 4, 8 kb primary memory cache and 512mb secondary memory cache.

I could then use CPU on another board.

I am re-installing operating system on a new Hard drive and keeping original drive as a slave.

Regards

John

It's a 478. A good replacement that's still available is an Asus P4P800SE. You will have to knock out the case I/O shield and replace it with the one that comes with the motherboard. You will not be able to use the Dell OS reinstallation CD as it's locked to a Dell bios.

Hi

Thanks for info, I found a Board at www.dabs.com that suits the bill an ASUS P4V8X-X with a VIA P4X533 chipset couldn't find the one you suggested in stock. (used for £17.49 ) Factory repaired.

I know I will have to install XP from Original Disk thats now problem as thats what i intended doing.

Always seem to get problems when I get a Dell machne or a Packard bell machine to update or fix.

That is a very poor choice. Via chipsets are just plain lousy with Intel processors.

Much as I don't care for Asrock, this is a much better board:

You wil have to modify the power-on/led switch to motherboard connector if you use the DELL case.
