I am connected through at&t dsl, and it works great, and I know I hooked it up correctly, but I am having problems with the speed. I am paying for the pro package, which is speeds of 1.5mbps-3.0mbps, and I am only getting about 1.5. I know thats in range of whats specified, but my friend who lives no farther than 2 minutes from me, is getting 2+ mbps. Is the distance that big of a factor? Would having the gateway hooked up to my computer, which is the basement, damper the speeds?

Leave your modem on 24/7 for at least 10 days before doing another speed test, they have to condition your line during this period. Yes, distance is very critical.

The thing is, I've had my DSL for over 10 days now. But if my friend gets better speeds, I dont even live that far away, would it matter that much?

2 minutes can be a lot of wire feet. Call AT&T and ask if they can try bumping the speed up. I believe they can read out your signal to noise ratio to see if it's possible.

Have you power cycled your modem?

I will try calling them, for sure. But could you explain what power cycling means?

Turn it off, then turn it on. If it doesn't have a power switch, unplug it then plug it back in.

The distance that you are located away from the central office of the company providing the DSL can greatly reduce the attainable speeds with DSL. I agree that 2 minutes is a lot of feet of cable and can conceivably reduce your speed by the amount that you are indicating.
