This is purely my opinion and not factual.
I think that gaming stratrgies have made gaming harder.
When the PS launched games usually took a good 80hrs to clock some even longer. But with the increase in the graphics department (enter PS2) it left little room for actual data and the dvd format should have solved this but alas it did not... Games became progressivly shorter so designers turned to putting in more side quests, extra missions, hidden stages, etc. But because we all dont think alike, what might take one person to 5 min to find will take his identical twin 3 hours...This brought about the popularity of the guide however gamers became lazy and landed up in a state of buy the guide before the game so you get enough time to read.So now, I believe game designers are returning to the complexity of the actual gameplay/storyline and not so much with all the secrets and hidden treasures.Cause as we all know you can get a statergy guide for that...
Or maybe game designers and guide pulishers work in conjuction to maximize there profits by creating a need for an additional purchases such as cheats or guides.
I have used a guide before...it was for final fantasy 8 so that I could collect all the rare cards but that was only after completing the game first.
