Hello!

I am in the middle of upgrading two of my computers.

One computer had an AMD 3500+ it was upgraded to an AMD 4800+.

The second computer has an AMD 3200+. It will be replaced with the AMD 3500+.

When I go to upgrade the computer with the 3200+ in it, I will have to remove the cooling unit (AMD’s) off of the CPU (3200+). Therefore the thermal compound between the CPU and the cooling unit will be compromised.

After the successful installation of the 3500+ I am going to need some thermal compound, correct? As far as I can remember I don’t remember seeing additional compound in the box that held AMD’s CPU and the cooling unit.

So my question is:

Can I use something like Arctic Silver 3 between the cooling unit and the CPU? Will I have to ask AMD for some thermal compound? I don’t want to mess up the warranty! I still have two years left!!

Thanks! :)

This is not an official answer, but from what I've read on AMD's forum site (by forum folks, not AMD folks) is that for CPUs with a heat spreader, AMD won't mind. The problem was on CPUs without the spreader, and users using AS improperly and thus shorting out the chip. AMD is often pretty good at answering email, so to be safe, why not ask them? (if you do, post back with the answer :) )
