I've ordered a new video card, AtI AIW x800XT which I hope to have by Friday.
My concern is that I've heard the card runs hot.
I'd like to know what video card coolers owners of the AIW x800Xt have bought and
if they would recommend their purchase.
Thank for your help.

I play newer games (HL2, FEAR, DooM, etc) and have had no problems with my 800 running with the stock cooler.

We always recommend trying the stock cooler first - you wouldn't want to void your warranty before you even use it (a few brands are OK with swapping coolers, provided you don't damage anything in the process, but not all).
My X800XL stays plenty cool (<65C)...much cooler than my X1800XT! (which runs idle at the load temp of the X800XL!)

Download ATI tool. Record idle temp for gpu core. Play a game for 20min. (Ati tool should be running in background). Open up ati tool, go to temp monitoring and record "Max" Load Core temp. Report back with the two temps.
Cant help you without you helpin us.

Thanks for your help.
I have installed the card and have used it for a while. I know it is running a lot hotter than my Geforce 4, just based on the room temp. after 30mins.
I also did a 3D Benchmark 05, and got a score of 5674, the report listed my FSB as 200
and not 800. The similar configured machines my score was compared to had their FSB listed as 800.
I am disappointed in the lag when I play Fear, it is about the same as my Geforce4, although the graphics are much better with the aiw x800xt.
I will do the test with ATI Tool this weekend and report back.
Thanks again.

I got curious and decided to test my system today.
The Gpu temp was 47 deg. idle, the fan was at 67%, the sensor chip temp was 48 deg
after playing FEAR
The Gpu temp was 67 deg, the fan was on 80%, the sensor chip was 63 deg
I put on the 3d and checked for artifacts and
the GPU temp went to 88 deg, the fan was 100%, the sensor chip was 65 deg
I stopped the artifact check because I thought the temp was getting too high.
My system has a 80mm fan bottom frt intake, a 80mm side mount intake, a rear 80 exhaust and a dual fan on the PS, one under and the other rear exhaust
Case is an Enlight mid tower 7237??
Is my temps causing the game to lag and do I need a third party vga cooler?
88 is warmer than I'd like, but I think it's still within a safe range.
That's a little warm, but not excessive. My old X850XTPE would run high 70's to low 80's under extreme load.
The game is lagging because you probably have graphics set on the high end of the cards capabilities. If you want to reduce lag, start turning down some of the eye candy, starting with AA and AF. Fear is a very demanding game. Try playing around with your settings and then run the benchmark program that accompanies the game. You should be able to tweak the settings to allow your card the optimum combination of quality and playability.

the report listed my FSB as 200
and not 800. The similar configured machines my score was compared to had their FSB listed as 800.
That's fine. That means the FSB is quad pumped (basically, time 4). So it's 200 x 4, effectively 800MHz.
Also, I believe the X800XL uses a different core design...looks like it runs cooler than the XT.

I'm playing Fear with the following config.
800 X 600 - 32
Vsync - off
all other setting are medium
I thought the x800xt would do better than that?
Could my memory be the problem, Corsair value select 2 matching 512MB ?

That card is getting way to hot with the fan on 100 percent even. I suggest you make sure there is cool air coming in and going out of your case and wiremangement is blocking anything.
Try to run the computer without the sidepanel and see if it drops temps.

What does the rest of your computer look like?
Did you properly un-install and install the drivers?

Sorry I couldn't reply earlier.
My system - Asus P4p800 SE (865PE)
P4 3.2 Gig Northwood
Corsiar 2 X512 MB 3200 Value select
Everex PS 365PVE (350 w)
Maxtor 60 Gig ( 9ms ) ide
Sony cd burner
Toshiba DVD player
on board sound card
I just switched from cable modem to dial up, so I now have a 56 k pci modem
I ran Fear with side panel off and GPU temp topped out at 69 degrees,
I guess I need better fans or more exhaust openings

... I ran Fear with side panel off and GPU temp topped out at 69 degrees ...That's not "bad" for a GPU.
