opinions on widescreen monitors "RJ"

RJ, you guided me in the past, i would like your opinion on these two monitors.

in the UK the Samsung is £50-100 more than the viewsonic.

ive read a few reviews that say the viewsonic range suffers with backlight bleed but im not sure if that is happening to VX2225WM.nothing much out there so far.

the samsung has great reviews but im not sure if i really need all the connection possibilitys.

Have you thought about the new LG 20.1"? I bought it about a month ago and its fantastic. DVI output, 2000:1 contrast ratio, and a 8ms response time. I paid about $330 USD for it (newegg had a deal). This (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824005078) is the monitor Im speaking of.

thanks Tin, i have a couple of LG's i am very happy with, so it is a possibility.
everytime i get close to making a decision something new pops up, just seen the LG 204WT, samsung 222BW, and theres a benq FP222W.

the LG looks good for the price.

after reading more on the VX2235WM, it turns out that you have a real nice VFM monitor there tin.
seems like a new panel tech coming out called SED, i dont know what this means but its going to affect prices of older tech monitors.

the LG 203/204WT is looking even better.

do you game with that monitor?

after reading some cracking reviews on the LG L204WT, i ordered one :)
should turn up monday.
found some more on the VX2235, not as good as it looks and TBH the Samsung is to expensive for what i want it for.

The LG looks like an excellent gaming monitor. It has a TN panel, so it's very fast, but of course it suffers from TN weaknesses such as dithering and low viewing angle.

But the contrast. . 2000:1. . never seen that before . .. it's a contrast that only CRTs were able to achieve.

The above mentioned Samsung would have been too slow for gaming anyway.
The Viewsonic is also pretty good, but not as good as the LG, and it also has a TN panel.

The LG was a good suggestion, you should be happy with that one.

I dont know much about monitor specs, How does the contrast affect the display?

The higher the contrast, the more accurate the dark values (like dark grey and black) can be displayed.
On monitors with a low contrast, subtle differences are not displayed, they look all the same. With a high contrast, you will see subtle differences in dark color as well.

The contrast ratio indicates how much brighter than a black pixel a white pixel is. So, with 2000:1, the white is 2000x brighter than the black. With 400:1, the white is only 400x brighter than the black.
Now white light is easy, you just open the pixel fully, and you get a white pixel. But even if you close the pixel completely to display, a small amount of light will pass anyway, so the black is no real black anymore.
So the better the contrast, the less amount of light passes through a closed pixel, and the more accurate the black values are.

Of course there is room for a small marketing trick. . if you just boost the brightness you also achieve a higher contrast ratio. But this is not the case here, as your monitor has 300cd/m² I believe, which is a common value, so it can be compared to other 300cd/m² monitors.

Just to address this, for others who may be interested, the Viewsonic line does not have a problem with backlight bleed.

If you view the corners with so-called "backlight bleed" head on, the uniformity is perfect. I have seen this myself with my own VX2025. The corners seem to get lighter, but if you adjust your position, there is no brightness change. While this may be a slight deficiency of the screen technology (light dissipation), that's a whole "nother thing (as they say) than backlight bleed.

Plus, it's very mild, and most people never even notice it.

The monitor is great to game on. Most games I own support widescreen resolutions, and there is no ghosting. Other than that, the viewing angle on here is pretty nice, I havent had any trouble with it. Because of the contrast ratio the colors are much more rich and vibrant. Comparing the image quality to my Samsung 710N 17" LCD, its no comparison to this LG. Its head and shoulders above what I had before.
