You need to install the proper drivers for the graphics adapter you have now.

Download the manual from here : http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/manual/mnu/spt_mnu_detail.php?UID=119&kind=1
It looks like the board has an integrated video and an AGP slot, it also looks like the integrated must be enabled/disabled in the bios.
On-Chip Video
Select the on-chip video. The default setting is Enabled.
Init Display First
PCI Slot If both PCI VGA card and AGP card are installed, the system will display the PCI
VGA card first.
AGP If both PCI VGA card and AGP card are installed, the system will show the AGP
card first.
Don'g go crazy but a basic video card that won't tax the power supply should get you up to speed.
Uninstall the drivers for the integrated video and then restart and disable it in the bios.
Shut down.
Install video card and set up the bios for it.
Install drivers.
edit : remember that you will need the drivers for '98 so you'll have to check the archive for whatever manufacturer you decide on.

It sounds like you lost the proper drivers for the video thats in there now, and they may just need to be reinstalled, although if you are in the market for it, an upgrade won't hurt either. Win98 was kind of famous for loosing drivers at times.

That could be it but that board only list an optional 4mb of on board display cache and it's old enough that it bridges the divide between playing/not playing DVDs (required a bios upgrade) .
Going by the manual MSi tried to make it as "future proof" as possible but I wouldn't put more than a TNT card into the AGP slot.
