I've recently bought a new webcam for my computer so i can communicate with my parents. (I'm using this on MSN Messanger Live) I plug my Webcam in (it has a USB connection and a MIC connection for the microphone). I run the sound test from within Windows XP only windows doesn't seem to pick up any audio.

I checked my microphone volume settings and moved the slider straight to the top, tried the test again but still doesn't detect any audio.

I'm using the onboard AudioPorts on a Gigabit Motherboard.... can't remember exactly what model it is but if you really need it i can find out.

Please can anybody offer any suggestions.

Ps. i've also bought another webcam (a cheap one) that just has a USB connection (no mic jack) and this also doesn't recognise any sound. I've checked the device manager to see if i had any conflicts or to see if anything wasn't there but everything is there and correct

In control panel, sounds and multimedia - audio tab, look at a couple of things. Make sure use only preferred devices is NOT checked - and see how many playback and recording devices are available. You may have to select the USB devices as default.

thanks for the advise GLC. i've tried what you have siggested but to no avail. The only option that i have are
Modem #0 Line Record
Realtek AC97 Audio
C-Media Wave Device

The bottom one is another sound card that i installed just to make see if my mothboard was at fault but the same problem happens. a USB device does not show up in any options

Any other thoughts
