Reinstallation means to rewrite the copy of os in the same folder where the os system files are already present. It doesnot format your HDD but instead keeps all your personal settings like program files folder, document folder but it only changes the files in your windows folder.

I hope this helps,

First make sure you backup (save to another location) all the files that you intend to keep. I suggest burning them all to a CD / DVD.

Put the Windows installation CD into the computer drive and restart the computer. When prompted press any key to boot the computer from the CD (if you don't see this option then you need to change the boot order in the BIOS).

Choose the option to delete the partion on the HDD that contains the current Windows installation. Now create a new partition to install Windows again.

You will be offered to do a Quick or Full NTFS format (if you are using XP), if you have the time then do the Full format as it will completely rebuild the file system on your HDD.
