Just curious how everyone does this.

I always go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information and check the available memory.
Is there a better way to check you available RAM versus used RAM (physical RAM, I'm not concerned about virtual memory)?

Same source but shorter path. Right click My Computer>properties

there should be some information on the performance tab within task manager.
Down on the taskbar right click and choose task manager.

I use TClockEX. This gives me a tray display of how much free physical ram I have.
