continuos slowdown when certain keys are held

Hi all. . .problem. . .Whenever I press and hold a letter/number key on the left side of my keyboard (not F keys) my entire computer appears to slow down - the sound is unaffected but framerate drops (major stuttering) this heavily affects games such as half-life and bleem

I have :

Win98 SE
P3 800
128mb 133mhz RAM
Genius keyboard (Net something or other)
Soundblaster 1024 value
Gigabyte GF-GA1280 (GeForce 2 MX)
VIATech Apollo mobo
40x CD-ROM CD\RW combo
