New Office Computer

I am going to build another computer for the office, and would like some recommendations. This is by no means a top of the line gaming computer, and will be used only for email, internet, Powerpoint, Word, etc.

Don't worry about an OS, perhipials, monitor, etc.

I will probably use the Antec Sonata II.

I need this as cheap as possible -- I was thinking somewhere around the +/- $5-600 range.

I wasn't sure if the Pentium D 805 was a good choice or not and if it could work with the motherboards that have 800mhz/1066mhz FSB speeds.

I can go AMD or Intel, but this computer, and possibly more to come, must be productive.

Could someone lead me in the right direction as of what processor to choose? I can probably go from there.

if that's all your going to be using the computer for than honestly your cheapest option would be to order a Dell.

Well, I'd really prefer to build it.

if you wanted dual core look at the pentium D line. this always leave upgrading option of core2
in the future.

a gig of ram should do you good, get dual channel

the antec sonata is a great choice

get a sata hard drive seagate and western digital are good options

use on board sound and video

on newegg I've found parts for a $140 build...40gb , 1.6mhz, 128mb, etc...its bad, but then again if its just for work...

Thats around ~$515 w/o peripherals, case, monitor, etc.

And about the case, the Lian Li PC-60 looks nice (for work) and can come without the clear side panel, and is only about $100.

Save big bucks on the case and power supply and get this one:

That's a dual rail ATX 2.0 Fortron-built 300 watt power supply in there. I've even used this case with lower end PCI-E video cards. There is no reason to use an enthusiast case or a "bling" case for a budget business build. This case is very functional and has decent construction quality.

The price on the 915 is now so low it doesn't make sense to use the 805 any more, much less a Celeron-D. The next logical step up is a C2D E6300 now that there are 945G boards out that support it such as the Asus P5L-MX. In fact, I think I'd look at that board for the 805 or the 915 - it's cheaper than the P5LD2-VM. Panama Red is building an 805 with that board, I'm awaiting a report.
