My brother brought me a friend's computer to fix. It had them modem get hit by lightning, or so they thought. Bought a new modem, couldn't get it to install, guy at OfficeMax/Depot told them that the one they bought was "probably incompatible with your system" and sold them another one. They had a friend try to install it. Anyway, when I got the computer it refused to boot from the HDD, fdisk said "no fixed disks present". I booted from a WinME boot disk, ran fdisk, and it found the drive, but it still wouldn't boot, so I did the fdisk /mbr thing, and it booted fine. Problem is, now Win95 says the Standard dual PCI HDD controller is working, but the primary and secondary IDE's have problems. Hence, no CDROM to install drivers. I have booted to safe mode and deleted it numerous times, same thing. I booted to safe mode and deleted everything under the computer in device manager. No help. What am I missing here?
System:
AMD K6 233
32 meg DIMM
S3 Virge video card
CMI8330 audio
Elpina MB
HP 2x/6x burner
No CDROM, just the burner
I tried running the setup on a Win98 upgrade, but it said something about the drive being compressed or a drive utility running. I can't find either of the above. Nothing in autoexec.bat or config.sys but CDROM drivers and sound drivers. No EZBIOS or anything like that either. I ran a virus scanner on it. The MB does have "Trend ChipAway Virus Guard" (or whatever it calls itself...) running.
I can't reformat/reinstall until I find out if there is anything on the drive they need (and hope it fits on a floppy...).
