I am trying to get a better understanding of Dos using Peter Norton's Complete Guide to Dos 6.22. How different is Dos 6.22 than the Dos bundled with Win98SE?

6.22 has a few more commands than SE.
Take a look in c:\windows\command for YOUR version of the commands, slightly shorter than a full 6.22 but most of the good, basic ones are there.

Thanks, I find out Dos 6.22 has 153 files in C:\DOS> and there were 47 files in C:\windows\command. Some commands (like EXTRACT.EXE) were not in DOS 6.22. Is SHELL in Dos 6.22?

You can use the MS-DOS 6.22 HELP FILES place them in a folder which you may name OLD DOS and then be sure to have following files in there..

1.Qbasic.exe
2.Qbasic.hlp
3.Help.hlp
4.Help.com this when executed will show something like this below where you have a complete Instructions of MS-DOS 6.22 - this here has been executed on Win2K pro - so it definately will work on Win98.
If you don't have the files then let me know..

here some thoughts about DOS - concerning your email..

Hi Charles,
in my opinion the knowledge of DOS does and will always help you to get a better understanding of computers , because it's the basics of DISK OPERATION SYSTEMS .

It's actually not that important what kind of DOS you will go through since most command lines are and stay the same if this is Peter Norton's or IBM or what ever DOS may comes around your way.
DOS gives you a deeper understanding of the used functions which now are just hidden in the Win32 files but still will be accurate may have a different name or alike but in fact are still the same. There is many thing if you are dealing with hardware that you can't do using Windows or GUI based OS's and just PLAIN DOS will put you on the right track even all the big Programming Software Companies deny this - it's like you are opening the hood of your car an looking at the engine which is below of that hood. Today's OS's except for LINUX which is open source code are sold as a BLACK BOX which wouldn't allow the END USER to open this BOX .

In your post on PCMECH you were asking about EXTRACT this is in fact almost the same as EXPAND - and you will be surprised EXPAND.EXE is still used in one of today's most talked about OS's - Win2K and also WinXP.!
I think the reason that MSsoft does things like this is just to make it impossible (they are on a lost path) to use this or this Excecutable file across the OS's of them - what a shame - just to pull the last penny out of the pocket of it's end users and sell the same thing more than one time Look at Win98 Win98Se WinMe then you will know what I mean.

OK I agree that Software has to go on and be developed and I also agree that there is a need to make things easier for the END USER but I still don't like to buy the CAT IN THE BAG without seeing the CAT itself. And there it is where DOS comes in - .
One more thing The files I told you in my Prior Message can also be executed by double clicking the file Qbasic this will give you a complete NEW perspective of the command line possibilities than just to execute the help.com and also you will be able to dig in deeper than with the regular help.

Thanks Hpro, plugging along with Dos.

I am currently running Win3.1 in a 486DX2 with 425MB drive and Win98SE with a 20Gig drive. How can I install Win95OSR25 in the 20Gig drive, next to Win98SE, so I can compare OS's? Can I run both OS's,Win95OSR25 and Win98SE, in the same drive? Will I need to repartition my HD?

Also, what TSR's are most commonly loaded for Win98SE from Dos?
Is loading TSR's from Dos only for Win3.1?

Thanks.

it will be quite difficult to install Win95 after you have already installed Win98 on the hard drive - even on a secondary partition you will need to create a new partition using Partition Magic or a utility like this - and if you do then use the one which can be run from within MS-DOS prompt it's only 933Kb - instead of 40Mb+ of the windows version.

After this you have to install Win95 to the new created partition but before you can do this you MUST rename TEMPORARELY the WIN.COM in C:\Windows - of Win98 - because otherwise Win95 will refuse to install.!it might do that anyway with this I mean refuse to install.

then also you need to backup MS-DOS.SYS and IO.SYS of Win98 because those files will be overwritten by Win95 - this is eventually true or Not! have never tried to do the reverse installl only the forwarded like Win95 - and then Win98 ..

I know that Win98 supports Dual Boot but I would advice to get a boot manager anyway and there don't enable the password option because it can cause hazarderous problems (System Commander) if you use some well known AV SCANNERS and then doing updates or remove them .

The best would be to buy a second drive and then install Win95 on that drive. Most easy most secure to your system.

TSR - TERMINATE and STAY RESIDENT are programs like the old VIRUS Scanners for MS-DOS or alike and are no more in use today - there are some Soundcards which are loading TSR's and I always keep them a Mile away from my computer or my customers computers - and the are all those nice little programs you call BOOT SECTOR VIRUSES and Program Viruses which are TSR's - Most of them.. but those are rather easy to spot, but this is another thing.

To my knowledge - Win98 doesn't use TSR's anymore - but I could be wrong on this one...so if, then please anyone correct me.
Hope this answers your question..

If you really want to learn dos and marvel at the power of dos, search for and download a program called 4dos. This program will show you how awesome dos could have been.
