Never Leave Case Open

Here's a good reason NOT to leave you case open, if you think your system is too hot. Got one yesterday - guy left his case open because he felt like the system was running to hot. His cat pissed in it. As it stands (right now) he's lost an EVGA 7900 GTX - it's full and that piss literally ate the gold contacts off! and one of his dual hard drives - a 320GB Seagate that was in a tray in the bottom. The board's an Abit. Beautiful board - never seen one up close. I took it out, used nearly two cans of air duster blowing it out. I think that it will pull thru. Board, CPU and RAM made it in the clear. Said it was a 651 - so he's lucky there. Sent him home with everything neatly in boxes, with drenched items wrapped in paper towels. He said he was going to kill the cat. I said: "No! It's not the cat's fault. What was you CPU temp anyway?" "42C." Go figure. He'll fix it when he has the money. That video card looks mega-dollar. Don't leave your case open.

I was running a machine I had just put a new NIC in with the case open. Still had the screwdriver in my hand from securing the card. I stood up, accidentally dropped the screwdriver, which (I am not making this up) tumbled 180° to land on the table next to the computer on the handle end, and then made a stunning right turn and speared directly into the computer case. Pegged the heat sink for the chipset.
Everything survived, and a lesson was LEARNED..
Yeah, don't leave your case open. Kids are an extreme danger to open cases...

That's funny!! I usually keep mine on, but it's off right now and yes, I do worry about one of my pets getting their nose wacked with a fan or the like.

Yeah. That was what drained out AFTER he had soaked up a batch! He's not a builder, and wasn't about to start pullin' things apart - gunshy. Look, I've left my case open many times. I stopped doing that when a Pepsi was knocked over and part of it ended up in the bottom of my case. Luckily, I didn't have two hard drives sittin' down there!

It's so hot down here that I have no choice other than to run my main machine with both side covers removed, fortunately there are no kids or pets about and the case is not in a position likely to allow anything to be dropped or spilled in to it.
The one I can never understand is the amount of machines I get in for repair that have coffee stains down the front of them.

The coffee stains are from people who sit their mugs on top of the case.

I keep my case back side off - when it's on, the temps soar a few degrees. I worry about my cat getting into it, but I keep my door closed and my cat is pretty decent.

And I will put away items with liquid like cup or bottle when fixing computer. :eek:

You all could do what I did to my case and just drill several holes on the side panel and glue a little screen on the inside of the panel to keep the dust out. Worked for me and it will keep it much cooler.

Exactly.... I always leave the side off when prime testing a new rig so I can better check temps...But I always do them in the shop/dungeon/basement...

I'd say.. thats a good top ten reason not to own a cat.... a dog wouldnt do that....! ;)

Hmm. Both of my side panels have been off for a while. I took the top off for a few days so I can finish work on it.

My comp was on full time over the summer but now it's only on weekends when I'm home. I almost dropped my mouse into the system, which might have been catastrophic with the top panel still off, but luckily I slapped it into my lap.

Still... a cat peeing into a computer... how weird.

I used to keep the side panels off, had it that way for a year. I never had any problems. My cats never touch the computer and there aren't any kids to mess with it. I have a good case with good cooling now so the side panels stay on.

Could be. I'm just speaking from personal experience (my parents PC had some coffee stains on it - after cleaning them up, I stacked a bunch of CDs and the router on top of the case to prevent them from putting their mug on it.

i used to keep my side off , but i mickymoused some old psu fans to work off the board and they keep the temps to below 40 usually . i keep thats side of the computer to the wall and high up so nothing could go inside , or pee inside of it .

It's an Antec Super Lanboy. The red thing is a rubbermaid paperclip holder. :D Basically, I'm modding my case, but the intermediate stages are months apart due to time constraints, with the system operating during those months. It's directly on the PSU since I flipped it (so the fan is on the top now), and the cup will eventually provide protection from things dropping in and shorting things out.

I think case open or case closed, if my cat decided to relieve himself on it, it would mess my PC up just as much. Either through the fan slots (all sides) or small holes in the case, something will get it in.

Yeah, a friend of mine used to leave the side of his case off. His girlfriend threw an ashtray at him one nite. Guess where it crashed ? It broke the vid card off at the connector.

Sorry to say but as soon as I read "The cat pissed in it" I just laughed so hard..
Almost fell out my chair and landed on my drink, which probably would of flew over and somehow found itself through the holes in my computer case right onto the parts.

I've had a few close calls. I usually keep the sides on on my case, but occasionally they are off. My computer is about eye level so the likelyhood of water ending up in it are close to zero. Has anyone seen the cup-holder/cigarette lighter 5.25" insert that radio shack sells? Sounds pretty stupid.

Wow, that would stink. I just screwed 8 more screws into my side panels after hearing that. (I have an acrylic case, so there are like 12 side panel screws per side)

Haahahahaha! funny your parents were to paranoid to move that stuff. I wish the people at my office were like that, that would be an easy fix!

Just when I thought that Ihad a unique situation. A friend brought me a PC that his daughter's dog urinated in. It took out the PSU and ther MOBO but the CPU was OK. I had to do some serious cleaning on the Video card and RAM.

Why not put all your PC's in/on a PC desk??? (The one im using has a space made to put the PC in side...nothing can get to it..)
