I recently installed Internet Explorer 5, then installed IE 5.5 (SP2) after hearing about bugs in IE5. Now, I get blue screens on start-up that say "A fatal exception OE has occured at 0177:BFF2CFC9". Now, I can't load up Windows on my C drive (10 gig). Luckily, Windows was installed as back-up on a secondary drive D (1.265 gig), and I'm running that now. There is also an error message involving "explorer.exe". There are *many* errors. Please help. :\

(I would rather not do a Windows clean install, because I know that is most people's first reaction. "Wipe it clean and start over". I have no way to back up the data.) Thanks!

keep in mind that if you have to reinstall windows, your other files are not usually affected (unless you fdisk or format the hdd) i have reloaded or refreshed as i call it my system several times on win98se and never damaged any other files. unless the sys is really damaged, the reinstall will even save all the preferences that you customized before.

I cleared up a nagging problem once by reinstalling my WIN98FE over top of itself. This can be done without formatting and clean install. You might also try IE repair. Do A Start, Programs, Accessories, System tools, System information, and select repair IE under tools.

If you are running an Anti Virus program - try and uninstall it from Safe Mode before reinstalling IE. I had this error with McAfee VirusScan and had to uninstall to correct the Windows error message.

I cannot run safe mode! I tried it and it *looks* as if Windows is loading, but then it says "explorer.exe" has crashed and nothing else happens. Now, what should I do?

(I don't know what a Windows environment is, unless you mean Win98SE or something; I am pretty sure mine is just the standard Windows 98.)

If I were to reinstall Windows without formatting (fdisking), how would I go about doing that? I am pretty much cluless about this stuff. Remember that I can't run in safe mode.

Do you have a bootup disk? If so put it into your floppy drive or with your win98CD into the CDrom Drv and startup your pc. When it is done you should be either at an A:\Prompt or the beginning of your install procees. If you wind up at the A:\Prompt Switch to C:\drive
and then to D:\ or whatever your CDROM DRIVE is and type install.
During the installation, if u are prompted for an installation directory and setup has it as: C:\windows.xxx Select to install to a new directory and rename it back to C:\WINDOWS and continue with the install. Your shortcuts and data should be intact, your drivers and such will have been replaced. As for IE5.0 I ran it w/o any trble - justed added the 128 security encryption, wish I had stayed with it. Installing IE5.5SP2 was a nightmare for me - my connectors got corrupted, so did kernal32, and winsock.dll. I unistalled lost Outlook Express email. See if the reinstallation gets your system backup, then uninstall IE5.5SP2.

If you use a startup disk, your CD drive will most likely be E because of the ramdrive that it sets up. The executable is SETUP, not INSTALL. The easiest way to reinstall over the top is boot with the CD, and as Nightsky indicated, change c:\windows.000 to c:\windows when asked where to install. To boot with the CD, go into BIOS and set the boot order to boot from CD first.

Now - before you go to all this trouble, try restoring a registry from before the problems started occuring. Boot to a command prompt only and type SCANREG/RESTORE . There will be 5 backups in there sorted by date - pick one.

Hey everyone! Guess what? GLC's suggestion to use the SCANREG/RESTORE option worked like a charm!!! The problem was fixed in under 2 minutes! Thank you very much and good day!

To anyone considering installing, Internet Explorer 5.5, STAY AWAY! It completely messed up my computer! Stay with 4 or 5 for now.

Thanks, again, GLC! (=

I don't think IE5.5 messed up your computer since almost everyone I know runs it and has been running it for awhile now without any problems. You (or your computer) just done something wrong. If you put 1000 cars on the road to a particular destination and one does not make it don't blame the road. IE should not get the blame.

Who the hell asked you "Carl Price"? Seriously, the problem was *solved* so this thread is dead now. I don't think anyone really cares about your opinion on Microsoft or how many of your "friends" use IE 5.5 without trouble. The point is I know that IE 5.5 completely ****ed my computer and it is considerate to warn people considering installing IE 5.5 that it ****ed my computer to where it wouldn't boot up on that drive. This forum is to help people and *most* people (who are normal) appreciate the caution. This is really not a difficult concept.

-=Sarah=-

WARNING! INSTALL INTERNET EXPLORER 5.5 SP2 AT YOUR OWN RISK! I SUGGEST USING 4 OR 5 FOR NOW UNTIL 6 COMES OUT AND IS TESTED. CAUTION!

Okay! MOST people don't have any trouble with IE 5.5. I just thought that people might not appreciate losing out on a great browser because you made a mistake or your computer is not able to run it. You are obviously upset so this is the last thing I will say on the matter.

PS. I know what these forums are for, I have been posting here for over 2 years.

Hey, bud, when you post a question in a forum, you're asking anybody/everybody, therefore you asked Carl. When you become a mod, then you can close a thread. Carl contributes, period. You had a problem with IE 5.5, most don't. Geez...

Elek: Please don't go off on anyone around here like that. Stuff HAPPENS - and I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with Carl's post. Calm down - do what works for you - which won't always work for others - and vice versa.
