Hi Gang

I have an older Pent III that I use to use. I gave it to my sister so she could get DSL. Now it has 2 fans on the Pent. and one in the Power supply, and it has a grill like in the front inside case, that looks like it was to mount a extra fan. When I used it I had it sitting on the desk no ever heat issues, well now that she is using it she has a little built in drawer section she wants it. Even with leaving the door open some it gets pretty warm, and with the DSl she is leaving it on all the time.

I would like to install another fan in the grill opening like I was describing, just to be on the safe side. Question is where do I get the power, the CPU with the two fans takes up both connections on the mother board.? Can I pig tail off the 12V that goes to the drives, and use that for a power source for the fan.? As long as I get the right size fan, and get one of those proper pigtails. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks and take care.........Gunny

You can get case fans with 4 pin pass-through connectors so you can get power for the fan from the power supply. One end of the pass-through connector goes into a optical drive and the other side connects to the 4 pin power connection from the power supply.

The attached image shows a fan with a 4 pin pass-through power connector.

If you have it installed in a desk cubbyhole, you need to open up the back of the cubby to allow for proper ventilation and leave the front door open (or install a vent). All the fans in the world will not help when the air has no way to get in and out of the unit.

Hi Cricket and GLC

Thanks you both for the info. I have opened the back of the cabinet some, and told her to leave the door open when the computer is on. I picked up a fan yesterday and installed it, I believe it will help, it seems to be moving some of the air around now, before it was just like stagnate. It hooked up just like you described, piece of cake. She has the modem and the computer in this little cabinet that is not much bigger then the computer, so I know moving the air will be important. Cannot talk her into sitting in on the desk top, you know how hard headed these ladies can be about things looking right, and neat.

Now to get her Mozilla working right, (she likes it what can I say) she says it has to be gone into 3/4 times before it will open up. Keeps giving her a message some thing like cannot open at this time or some thing like that. I will go over and see for myself what is going on.

Thanks and Take care>>>>>>>>>>>Gunny

It doesn't matter. She needs to have it in the open.

Hi Chuck

I guess you don't have any sisters or a wife, ha ha ha ha I can talk and explain till I turn green, but that is not going to change where that computer goes.

I am saving my breath, I might need it some time in the future. No sense waisting it on this issue, I cant win. So if it burns up then we will talk some more. ha ha ha

Thanks...........Gunny
