SATA windows install problem [Archive]

I just bought a new Western Digital SATA 74GB 10k rpm raptor drive for my system (specs in sig) and I tried to put a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro on and it installed everything fine in the dos screen (and yes, I used the SATA drivers when promted for third party support). It restarts to continue the installation and when its in the middle of "installing devices" with about "31 minutes remaining" it exits out and just shows a blank screen with the blinking cursor and doesn't do anything else. Does anyone know what this might be, if its a problem with the hard drive or windows?

2 things to try. Unplug any other harddrives during the install process, and experiment with different service packs slipstreamed into the install CD. I was helping a friend re-install windows in a very similar motherboard, (it was K8V, but it was socket 940 since he had an opteron) and we ended up having to use an SP1 install CD. You can fairly easily slipstream SP1 or SP2 into an earlier install CD; reverting to a previous service pack I don't think is possible.

How do you slipstream SP1 or SP2 into an earlier install CD?

Back in my day you have to manually unpack all the files from the CD, run some command line option in the service pack to integrate it, then burn all the files back onto CD using norton, and along the way create a new boot image. This tool does it all for you, you just need a windows cd and the full service pack file.

Looks like you beat me to an answer by 8 minutes glc:). Years ago I followed the instructions on a very similar webpage, perhaps that exact one. They do work just fine, but can be quite tedious. I would suggest trying my link as the whole process is automated.

for now, i just did a drive copy of my old drive to the new drive but I do want to do a fresh install sometime soon cause there's a lot of stuff thats on my computer that's probably slowing it down than what i could be running. A fresh start would probably be easiest.
