Hi,
I have installed Diskeeper 5.03 on my NT4.0 box in work. I used to use DK Lite but this version has the 'Set it & forget it' utility. It works fine behind the scenes and I need it as my drives / PC get a LOT of work on a day to day basis.

I build a spare PC in work with ME. It was an experiment to see of DK 5.0 would run on it as it deos with 95 / 98. It ran fine with ME and did a MUCH better job then the MS defrag. I was very happy as I use ME at home (on this PC) and wanted to know if DK 5.0 would run on ME etc....

However I emailed Executive.com (http://www.executive.com) and asked them if it was safe to use DK 5.0 with ME. They mailed me back and said that I'd need DK 6.0 / 6.0SE in order to use it with ME.

But I went ahead and installed DK 5.0 on this PC and it ran just fine. I hadn't defragged this puppy for two weeks and DK 5.0 ran just fine and was at least twice as fast as MS Defrag.

Was I right to install it despite the fact that I was told that I needed 6.0? Was this just a marketing thing to get me to buy it or will I eventually see BSODs all round :D.

Has anyone used or are using DK for a non NTFS system? What do you think of it? What about version 6.0 for a non NTFS system? What about setting up the 'Set it and forget it' option on a non NTFS system.....performance hit, validity of 'Priority' settings and do they actually have an effect?

I for one will be buying DK 6.0 / 6.0SE. For NT / 2000 based systems it simply fantastic. But what about the other flavours of Windows??

Opinions PLEASE!!!

I have used Diskeeper 5.03 on Win95, 98FE and SE, and Windows 2000. I recently upgraded to 6.0 and love it. I haven't ever used it on WinME as I never bought ME. I was actually wondering how it worked. ME uses the FAT32 FS so I never saw a reason why it wouldn't work. Keep me posted.

I have 5.03 installed on my NT box, which is actually dual boot with 98. 98 is on a fat32 partition so of course NT can't see it, but my boot partition is fat16 and I use it for common files - and DK is running on it and the NTFS partition every night set and forget no sweat. I suppose I could also install it in 98 but I seldom use 98 so it's not worth it - a defrag every few months is plenty to keep it cleaned up.

By the way - the Win2000 defrag sure looks a lot like DK Lite - is it?

Hi guys,
GLC, I now have WIN2K Pro but I haven't 'used' it. I set it up on the same PC in work as ME is now. I don't know if DK is like the MS defrag but I do know that, according to Execsoft, DK is the only MS certified defragmenter for use with WIN2K Pro / Server.

In my job I've set DK to run, in 'Set it and forget it', 'All day, Every day'. I'm not at my PC 50%+ of the time (such is my job) so I let DK sort out the disk while I'm away. My D: drive / NT drive (I have four local) was getting heavily fragmented after just a days use which concerned me. I'll leave DK run for a week or so and see if thing improve.

GLC, could you / would you install it on you 98 partition and see if you notice and performance differences between DK on NT and DK on 98?? I will assume that ME is in the same category as 98 in terms of OS type.

Well I have ME on FAT32 with DK 5.03. I use the same settings on C: (Windows ME) drive as I use on the NT machine, D: (NT installation drive).....'Continuously, All day, Everyday'.

Any info on 9X or ME would be interesting just to see if application priorities mean the same thing on a 9X / ME machine as they do on an NT machine.

I use DK6.0 on Win2k but rather manually then Set and forget even the comp is on24x7 I still like it more to see when it does defrag - which takes only a few minutes and is done everyday at least once - and there is always something -- Win2k is heavley used on this computer.

As for the Win98 drive and also the only one WinMe machine I have I use Nortons Speed Disk version 4.0 it's alot faster and it has the abitlity to move the swapfile to the end of the drive ..

I once run Dk 5.03 out of Win2k and defragged Win98 and when restarting into Win98 program executions were slower than usual - that's whay I use Nortons SD..
