View Full Version : Serious Battery Leakage

I took out my old 486 case out of my storeroom, opened it up and to my horrors, a BIG battery leakage has occured! All the white crusty stuff sticking on the board, and near the keyboard AT connector. It seems like this battery contains Cadmium, and all I can do is to not touch it or breathe it. Unfortunately the 486 motherboard is so dead (the evil chemical spill has 'burned' other parts nearby) and I don't plan to reuse it (and the other components) anymore.

Is there any tips how to effectively remove the colossal evil chemical spill? Wanna reuse my old 486 casing to make way for another old Pentium MMX board.

Use some thick rubber gloves,(from home depo or lowes...) and when you get it all wirebrushed off, maybe throw some baking soda and water on it. The clean it really well again. Then i would think about painting it. Both as a mod and as more protection of what you may have missed.

I'm not sure, about all that just as a thought. Never had to deal with a battery leak like this.

I see. I'll prepare the stuff for cleaning tomorrow, and maybe will do the painting.

Must I use a specific spraypaint for the metallic casing? My casing is something like these older Dell optiplexes (the ones with Pentium MMX) and it's cool and hard to the touch. :D

Just spray paint thats ok to use on metals. Krylon makes good paint.

Wow! That's colossal! DELL seems to always find the leaking batteries.
