Modem not connecting

My friends comp is having a dif. time connecting to thr internet. Error message comes up saying unable to establish a connection. Don't appear to be any conflicting devices. Someone said to check the IRQ settings....how do you do that and what should they be? Thanks in advance

Sounds more like a wrong setting in the dialup networking properties - delete the connection and make a new one using the Internet Connection Wizard.

Thanks GLC but can you guide me through it step by step. just what am I deleting and where would I find the "wizard". It is AOL provider but we know the problem is with the comp. and not the service. Thanks again

AOL? Never mind. Reinstall AOL or find an ISP that doesn't use proprietary connection software (i.e. standard dialup networking compatible).
