Intel Stock HSF + Newegg Reviews = Bad?

Hi there,

Someone on the Newegg reviews said the stock HSF IF INSTALLED PROPERLY for the Intel Pentium D 805 should make it run 30C idle or so, and I idle 42C... does this mean I didn't install it properly? I'm worried a bit - should I be? I mean I'm not the only person in the reviews saying they have mediocre temps. at best. Could the HSF really fall off? The plastic prongs are through the holes at the bottom of my motherboard.

If you have two nearly identical systems with the motherboards being the only variable, you're going to get different temperature settings. There are variations between the sensor accuracies and placement. I have two similar setups, and 1 has an idle temp or 30°C and the other has an idle of 46°C.

Variances in airflow, case design, and motherboard sensors allow for wide range of temperature readings for the same chip. I'm not sure about that CPU family, but I wouldn't worry about a 42° reading.

It is near impossible to get that realistically low idle temps unless your room temp is 15-20c. Motherboard sensors are off, thats just a fact.

I trust your temp sensor must more then i trust his. 42c is a realistic and OPTIMAL temp.

805 temperatures would only cause worry if and only if they are hitting 67+.

I have heard wonder cases of people remounting their stock hsf's a few times and getting much lower temps. I would try two remounts if your still not secure about whats going on. 1 Remount=wipe off old thermalpaste, apply new thermalpaste, and attach to motherboard. Two would repeat the process, including new thermal paste.

The HSF (or any other HSF for that matter) could fall off if you don't have it snapped in all the way, but if you didn't have it snapped in all the way, you'd be getting some extremely high temps, so you don't have to worry about that.

I actually fixed my problem. Both Pentium D 805 systems now idle around 45c. I just added the blow hole that attached to the side of my case for the HSF.

Just be on the safe side..... remove the HSF, clean off the old thermal paste... apply a new layer and reseat the HSF. Double check your work and give it another go. A CPU temp in the 40's is not that bad... check your temps under load with prime95.

Keep the stock thermal paste - not using it voids your warranty. I doubt re-applying thermal paste will make a whole lot of difference. Maybe a couple degrees at best.
