I'll have to check but my friend (it's actually my friend who owns the disk) may have a license, then, because I believe he has used it several times.

XP retail cannot be used on multiple computers legally. FYI discussions about circumventing the EULA to install it on multiple computers will not be allowed on this board.

I don't intend in ANY way to discuss tamper with Microsoft's EULA. I just asked a single question and got my answer.
I said my friend my have a license for the disk, making it absolutely legal for him to instal it on as many machines as he needs to.
Thank you for your assistance.

I am confused because my original thought was what Statica said, once and only once regardless if you bought the retail version, however I am reading people who say that Microsoft allows you to use it on more than one computer (with the same user license?). Is this correct? This is in no means meant to turn into a piracy discussion, I would just like the facts. I'd hate to spend a lot of money on 2 OS for my new computers that I'm building when I don't need to.
when i was in school i got a xp pro from my college for $25 which was back in 2001 and i can use this on all of my pcs and i have used it on more then one pc thats for sure. off the top of my head i think i have used it on 15-20 pc and virtual pcs.. i was really suprised at that, apparently i got some sort of volume license or something cause i have been using it on a lot of pc's (all of my own though, im not using it on other peoples pc). all of them pass the wga no problems.........boy did i get lucky not to mention i only paid $25 bucks for it. .hehehe

If your college is selling VLKs (volume license keys) then they are doing something that they shouldnt be. The educational pricing is not part of the VLKs. It is just something that s/w mfgers (Microsoft, Apple etc) provide to educational institutions.
The answer still stands .. a retail license of XP is for ONE PC only.

You can purchase just the license key if you already own XP Professional. I have seen it at Best Buy.
The retail version may only be installed on one computer at a time. You are allowed to install it on another computer if you REMOVE it from the first computer.
If you are building 2 computers, buy 2 OEM copies of XP.
Buying an additional license for a retail version costs more than you would pay for a full OEM version from an online vendor.
