Generally speaking, how long is it recommended we leave a laptop on standby?
Using WinHomeXP

Microsoft:
"Standby reduces the power consumption of your computer by cutting power to hardware components you are not using. Standby can cut power to peripheral devices, your monitor, even your hard drive, but maintains power to your computer's memory so you don't lose your work."

There really isn't a general amount of time...all laptop batteries will last a different length of time. I think hibernation is better than standby because it saves an image of everything that you are doing to the hard disk, so even if the battery runs out, you don't loose anything :)
