How do I ping my routerto see if it is working?

Or are there other methods to check if it is working properly?

Really no problem, this is a old router that has worked fine for a year or so. Then beening a novice I did something wrong and messed it up. Tried to reprogram it and don't know what I am doing. Using DSL modem with Xp home os, and after several attempts could not get on line with the router connected. After playing a bit more asked for a IP address and now I am on line through the router connected. I have no idea if it is working or not.

The question is how do I know if it is doing it's job?

One more question - what exact brand and model is your DSL modem?

1. Contact Verizon and have them walk you through making sure the Westell is in the BRIDGE mode.

2. Do a hard reset on the D-Link by holding the reset button in for at least 10 seconds.

3. Log into the D-Link at 192.168.0.1, username admin with no password, and set up the router for "PPPoE". This means you put your Verizon username and password into the router.

Thank you for the help,

I will try to contact Verizon as you suggest, but that is a big deal. After a long wait they will connect you with someone in probably China that don't know what you are asking.

If you are online with the router connected, then you are at least connected, but may not be optimized till you make sure the modem is in bridge mode and router is doinf the authenticating and connecting your account.

That is what you have to ask Verizon. The procedure is not exactly intuitive and it's best that you be walked through it. The modem has to be connected directly to the PC to do it.

I realise that I am being a pest, but thank you for bearing with me ----

I finally got through to a person at Verizon and was told my Westell was already in the bridge mode.

Is there a way to check this?

If it's already in the bridge mode, then proceed with the hard reset and PPPoE configuration on the router. The TCP/IP on your network connection should be set to obtain an IP address automatically.

Went to Wan, it was in Dynamic IP Address, changed to PPPoE, it came up with the user name that verizon had given me, entered the password (2) that verizon had given me, clicked on apply then could not get back on line.

Went back to WAN, changed back to Dynamic Ip, clicked apply and back online.

As I have said before don't really know what I am doing, as I think I am on line and can surf the net for things I want, maybe we should quit this thread. Starting to think it best before I really mess up and will not have what I have now. Maybe the router is doing it's job as is. I was told to use a router to block some of the spam and virus that comes through without a router. I did have a second computer (not now) and it did work with it.

I do want to thank you for all your time and effort to help me.

Then the modem is not in the bridge mode. The way you have it will work, but it's not optimal.

I really hate to take up your time and efforts to help me, but it is greatly appreciated.

I will try to call Verizon again, maybe they will connect me with someone in Africa that knows how to put the modem in the bridge mode. I think their support is really bad, or it may be I don't ask the question in the proper way or form.

As you know I am in Florida and today the Bucs have a game that I would like to see.
Did not call Verizon for help on modem bridge as I did not want to be tied up on the phone.
However did Google a bit.
I had in my internet connections three icons --

1 - 1394 2 - Internet 3 - Local Area

I now have a forth 4 - Verizon.net

Have I messed anything up, still able to surf the net?

Remove the Verizon and Internet connections. With a router all you need is the local area connection.
