I got an older win 98 pc i use as a file server and web page server in my network I was wondering is there any way for others out side my network to see this web page on my own web server?

do you have your webserver sitting in a dmz zone, or is it behind your router/firewall? are you forwarding any ports if not in the dmz zone? do you have a host record pointing to your ip address on your router

No for the DMZ zone I never thought of that and yes it is behind a router thats firewalled and no I don't have any ports on this PC opened, I'm not sure which port(s) to open if need be and a host record I'm not sure what that is !!! LoL :rolleyes:

set a static ip on your webserver, then take that ip address for you webserver and plug it into the routers port forwarding page, and set it with port 80 and enable it.

a host record would be used to associate a domain name to your webserver (ie www.stupidstuff.com would be resolved to an ip address which directs it to your webserver if you set up a host record with that domain name and your ip address. u first have to register for a domain with godaddy or some other registrar before you can create a host record). its not needed, you can still get to the weberver without a host record with your routers ip address, but you will have to give everyone that ip address in order to get to the webserver.

the only way would be to give out the ip address, or sign up for a domain and create a host recording pointing to your ip address.

OK I got road runner and they change IPs from time to time I sure you know that;) NOW if I gave out my ip address and had my port for that computer opened and you typed it in would you see the page and on my router is this the section (pictured below) were I expose the pc to the net

OK I port Port Forwarded the ip address of that computer I have as a web server and oped port 80 for that pc and typed my ip address in and it worked

the only thing that changes is the IP address roadrunner gives me I think they change them every month or so at least I know I can do it :o


NOW I have to see if I can get an ftp server going :D

P.S as for the router I did basically set it up the same way as if I were going to host a game server.

I should add I set this server up from a remote location using REALVNC
I never sat at the computer keyboard at all today just from my laptop downstairs from the computer that I set up up stairs


It's been a good day in the computer world for me LOL






P.S I used the web serving program called Abyss Web Server X1 (v 2.3.2) just in case someone else out there wanted to try this them self

I like to use dyndns.org so I don't have to know my changing ip address all the time.

i use dnspark.net and use directupdate running on my pc's/servers.

i bought a domain like remote555.com, and then for all clients i install direct update and set up a host record for each clients pc, for example. one client i would give him pc1.remote555.com which can be used to connect to there pc, another client i would use pc2.remote555.com and so on. makes it easy for me to admin all of them without having to talk them through getting me there wan ip to connect remotely.

you have to leave your web server on in order for people to be able to view your webpage, if you sign up for ddns, then usually there is a program that will start and run in the background (for me its direct update) so if your ip changes then the program will update my host record for the change in the ip address.
