Hi,

This is my first build. When I go to turn the PC on I get nothing its like the PSU is dead but I know it is isn't because the same PSU is inside the PC I am on now, which has a higher spec. So it is definetley powerful enough.

All I can hear is a really high pitched squeaking noise coming from the PSU. It doesen't make this noise when I have it in this PC.

I am totally confused by this could it be a faulty mobo?

Thanks for you time.

Ben.

Wait...so the PSU turns on...(is the fan in the PSU spinning)...or does the PSU just squeak? My guess is you have a bad PSU, (whats the make and model?)

Follow the steps in this thread:

http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409

Please post the brand and model of all your components, including the power supply.

@whubbard: There is nothing wrong with the PSU I am using it to power the PC I'm on now. It only does not work in the new build machine. So it can't be the PSU.

@Freakitchen: I'm going to try those steps on that thread and I'll report back.

Thanks for the replies.

Right I tried that and I got nothing the PSU only makes this squeaking noise when it is connected to the new build. In any other machine the PSU does not squeak.

Ok components in the new build.

ASROCK 775i65G
Intel P4 630
1 x 1GB PC3200
Maxtor 160GB IDE
and some DVD-RW
PSU: WIN POWER ATX-400

I have a new PSU coming soon which is made by ColorsIT and it is 480W.

I don't see how it can be the PSU which is failing here due to the fact that it is powering the PC I am using this second without any squeaking.

Is this a new PSU just for this new build or an used one from a different system? If it is from an old system and is a Dell/HP/Emachine/etc, it may not be compatable with the new motherboard.

The PSU is from a build by someone else no brand. It is from a system that is less than 9months old.

Make sure you do the out of case build before going any further. Sounds like either the mother board is shorting out to the case or the motherboard is DOA. In either case, the PSU can get damaged.

Ok I did the out of the case build and it powered up.

So what does this tell me? That the motherboard is shorting out to the case? How do I get around this?

Thanks.

Check in the motherboard manual as to which holes on the board are for mounting screws(ATX boards have 9 mounting holes). Check the mounting area in the case to see if the standoffs match the pattern of holes on the mobo with NO extras. Try without the I/O sheild, the tags that stick out could be touching something incorrectly.

Ah, finally. Thanks!

There was a misplaced standoff. 8-)

Now though the PC starts but I get no monitor output. Any ideas?

This is really annoying because I only have 1 PSU atm. I have to take it out of this PC and put it in the other one just to try a suggestion. :P

Try resetting the CMOS on the mother board. Should be a jumper or pull the battery for a few minutes. (power unplugged)
Are you using the on-board video or an add on video card? If a card, there may be an extra power connection to the card.

New thought: Make sure that the 4 pin power connection for the motherboard is plugged in along with the 20 pin connector.

Make sure the video card is seated properly and has an additional power cable attached (if so equipped).

I am using onboard video I do have a video card I could put in it to try. Will try these suggestion and report back.

Thanks.

Cleared the CMOS and tried using a video card I have. Still nothing and also I am getting no beeps.

Try booting without ram/drives/use on-board video then try the video card. If still no joy, may have damaged the mother board from the shorting out by the extra standoff.

Did u also make sure that it didn't need an extra power connector?

Booted without RAM and drives and nothing. Any other things to try? Or should I assume the motherboard has been damaged?

The video card I tried did need an extra power connector which I plugged in.

Only thing left is to recheck that the PSU is still good. But my feeling is the mobo is toast.

I think the board has been damaged. Where did you get it from, you can still probably RMA it

Lol: Flanzig...we posted at almost the exact same time!

lol, the PSU still works its powering this PC again...

I can return the mobo its less than a week old. :)

Thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated.

No problem. Hope all goes well with the new Mobo.

Hang on a moment.....In post #9 you stated that the system powered up out of the case. By powered up, do you mean you got a display and post beeps, or just that the fans started up? If the former, then the problem still lies with a shorting problem in the case. If the latter, then you have a faulty component.

Try pulling the RAM, and starting up (out of the case). Do you get any beeps?

He already pulled the RAM and tried all of that.

gallaghb

I didn't get any beeps or display out of the case as I didn't connect speaker or monitor, but I will try that now.

I didn't pull the RAM when I built out of the case though.

Last attempt I guess then.

That's a fair point, but he DID state that the system 'powered up' out of the case. I wanted to clarify whether he got a display in this out-of-case state.

Good Luck, I have my finger crossed. However if it does work, I will have no idea at all at whats wrong.

Yep, do that and connect both the speaker and the monitor. If you don't get a display at this point, then you're looking at a faulty component. Finally, pull the RAM - if you don't get any beeps then it looks like a faulty motherboard.

Should of asked about getting a display on the out of case test. Sometimes one needs 6 eyeballs to see the obvious.

Yeh well got nothing anyway. Guess the mobo is faulty afterall. Will return it asap.

Thanks again.
