Having touble with build

Hey guys, I'm having some major problems getting things connected with my build.
I have the motherboard mounted with Ram, Cpu HSF installed. My problem now is figuring what cables get connected where. It seems that some cables from the PSU go to MOBO but then it seems like some don't work. Like the Fans and the SATA. I am installing one hard drive. So do I need only one connection.

Where can I get some more information. The manual for the mobo is terrible.


CPU = e6600
Mobo = p5w dh deluxe
RAM= 2 gb crucial
Case = 180p
psu= FPS 700 watt
HDD= seagate 320 gb
optical = liteon dvd/cd +-RW
windows xp
sapphire 512 mb x 1900xt
22 inch moitor

Have you read the motherboard manual yet? You should read it before you even start the assembly.

I realize that I stuck the 1394 int o the USB and vice cersa. I never turned any power on though but the manual specifically says not to do so.... Do you think this messed something up?

If you haven't powered up yet, your OK. Case wires can be a bit tricky, so double check the connections. If you fell it doesn't look right, unplug them and come here and post a question on the exact problem.

I think I'm getting straightened out but I'm struggling witht the SATA connections. I have One 320 GB hardrive and I'm confused on the different options. Should I set it up for RAID?

ANd do I only need to connection one SATA connection?

For one hard drive: no RAID. May want to partion it into sections like a 40gig for the OS and apps/120gig for audio/video and the rest for data. This is only one way you could set up the drive.
For connections to the SATA drive you have the small SATA cable and a power connector. Double check the connection info on your particular model of HD.

Can you please tell me how to get the fans plugged in. There are 3 fans. THey have a larger prong plug thatlooks like it goes in to a PSU connector and there is also what looks like a 3 speed manual control.

THe control slots on the MOBO are three prong inputs and I don't see anything that matches!

Also do I plug into the power or channel plug?

CPU fan plugs into a header close to the CPU marked "CPU fan"
Case fans can be plugged into a spare 4 pin molex plug from the PSU.
There is probably chassis fan connection point on the motherboard marked "CHA fan".
If the case is an Antec, check the manual for fan connections and how to do the fan controller

You don't create partitions in the BIOS. You go into the BIOS to be sure it detects your drives and then set the optical drive as the first boot device.Okay so the chassis fans don't go into the mother board at all?Depends on the type of power connector the chassis fans have. If they are the 3 pin type you can connect them to the motherboard. If they are the 4 pin type they connect directly to the power supply. It's actually better not to connect too many fans to the motherboard to avoid power related problems.Do I need to configure the hard drive and Optical before I install ? Umm before I install the drives do I need to configure them or should I just install and plug?

WIth the SATA all I have is the one red cord (from MOBO) plugged into MOBO... Is that all I need for one HDD? It's in SATA 1. DOes that sound right?

RIght I have six unused four pin Molex that fit the chassis fans. But At the tip end of the cables there is another plug One is labeled p7 and one is p 11 and They are not plugged into anything. That's what I'm asking

Each power run from the PSU has many molex connectors on them to connect other things like multiple fans.
SATA drives:no jumper configuration
Optical drive: set jumper to CS/plug blue end of data cable to the IDE connector on the mobo and the black to the optical drive.

Jumper: mechanical connection between two points.
On the back of the optical drive you have the data cable connector and a power connector/between the two should see set of 8 pin with a little piece of plastic between two pins. Look on top of the drive, should be a map of the connector layout and which pair of pins is CS.

to the left is something called them host interface it's about forty pins, 20 top 20 bottom

to the left is slave/master plug in.

If only 6 pins with the jumper: Left 2 pins:CS/center 2 pins:SL/richt two pins:Ma
CS=cable select
SL=slave
MA=master

to the left is slave/master plug in.That's the jumper flanzig1 was referring to.WHich one's need to be connected?You only need to connect the IDE ribbon cable to the host interface and the 4 pin power connector from the power supply. Set the jumper to CS if you're using a 80 wire IDE cable. If it's a 40 wire IDE cable, set the jumper to master. Don't worry abou the rest, not needed.Ok I think I'm gettin closer. How can I find the IDE cable number 80 or 40?

OK I have the optical in and secured. THe powerr issue is pretty straight forward. I have the CD/DVD rom "ribbon cable I think it's called. I plug it into the host interface and then to the mobo??? I think there is only one place on the MOBO that it can go. It's called
"PRI _ IDE.

IS this correct?

what else do I need to plug in? I think the mobo is on board audio

The connectors on the 80 wire IDE cables are usually 3 different colors. The standard colors are blue, grey and black. The surface texture of the ribbon cable is finer than the 40 wire cables.

The connectors on the 40 wire IDE cable are usually the same color. The surface texture of the ribbon cable is "lumpy".

OK I working on the Optical now. I have it installed and secured. I think the powerr issue is pretty straight forward.

I having trouble with the other connections. I think it's calle the Ribbon cable that connects to the host interface. SO I connect there and then where do I plug the other end to? THere seems to be only one place on the MOBO caled "pri IDE" is this right?

What other connections do I need to make?

If the cable is a 80 wire, the blue connector goes to the motherboard and the black connector to your optical drive. The red stripe on the edge of the cable aligns to pin 1 on the motherboard and drive connectors.

Cricket, I don't see any of that on the ribbon cable. There was one slot in the middle that didn't have a pin and I just lined it up like that. Is this ok?

I still have no audio going into the optical drive. I have an audio from the chassis to the MOBO though. Is this ok?
