I just downloaded AVG. When I click on the icon to install, a window pops up that says not enough memory. I have a 500 Gig drive of which 4.71 Gigs is being used. What might be happening? Thanks

Seems like it is talking about memory, not storage. If it is asking for more memory it doesn't matter how much hard drive storage the system has, right?

I guess...I have 2 gigs of RAM...that should be more than sufficient.

I tried shutting down and restarting...no good.

I just noticed the window says: WinRAR self-extracting archive...not the usual Installation Wizard. Could this be related to the problem? Could something be hogging whatever kind of memory is needed for loading AVG?

Just did a Google search for "WinRAR self-extracting" Came across a software called WinRar 3.61 in download.com. Downloaded it and installed it. Still get the same window that says not enough memory.

Did AVG change to a different way of extracting the anti-virus software? If so, too bad....Windows Installation Wizard worked fine. They just lost a "free" customer...LOL

Looks like I am going to have to cough up some money and pay for anti-virus software. Any suggestions? Is Microsoft's any good? Don't even suggest Norton...LOL

If that's a WinRAR file then you will have to unpack it to get to the zip file it may contain and from their, once unzipped, you'd get to the set up (.exe) files.
May I ask where you downloaded it from?
The standard AVG file is just an exe. file on the web site and it looks like this :

avg75free_430a828.exe 7.5.430

I think I got that backwards, the rar file exist inside the zip file.

I use AVG all the time and have never had this occur, even with the new version. The new self-extracting file works fine even on old 500MHz machines with 128MB memory.

I doubt that the problem is on AVG's side.

Has this computer been scanned thoroughly for malicious software?
Did the file come straight from Grisoft or elsewhere?

I have had good luck with the files from download.com.

AVG is not a .RAR file. It is a .pf file.

Pam, I downloaded it from the Grisoft website....the makers of AVG

I just did some more investigating and found out the new version of AVG is a .pf file. This means a company named Alladin Systems requires that you purchase Stuff It, (yeah thats actually the name ironically ROFL).. in order to un-stuff AVG. I feel like I have been told to "stuff it").

So the reality is that AVG is no longer free unless someone has a free hack around this...but we don't do that in here.

So here is the deal...you get a 30 day "free" trial. At the end of the free trial they bill your credit card. Free?...yeah right!

This is really too bad because I really liked AVG but have no interest in purchasing Stuff It for 30 bucks. And no, I have never had any problems installing AVG in the past either.

I kinda suspect AVG may be getting a kickback for compressing their software with Stuff-It instead of the old free way.

Perhaps someone else can try installing AVG and see what happens?

is 7.5 the latest AVG antivirus free edition out right now? if so i found it and downloaded from here. also has the free avg anitspyware .exe here as well, which i think is the same link pam123 posted above.

Ditto for me. I have noticed a few threads which indicate AVG has made it tough to find the free version on their site. I think one of the threads is titled: AVG no longer free?

Bottom line is that it is free when you download the correct one. I downloaded it a month ago and it never asked for a CC. I would never have installed it had it wanted a CC.

Search for the free version's link on this forum and it will be worth the effort.

I found the free link in numerous places by doing a simple google search, and have downloaded from three different sources, including the same place as Pam's link. Where I am downloading from is not the problem. The problem is that I cannot seem to open ANY of the downloads because they are a .pf file.

Perhaps my computer can open a .pf file?......whats the memory problem? Perhaps something is eating up memory that is used to open a .pf file? ..I have no idea.

I have AVG running on one computer at work and two other computers at home....so I agree, its not a user error (me) or the software...it is the compression that has changed perhaps.

I just wrote an email to Grisoft...perhaps they know. I will post back here whether or not they respond.

Something else is going wrong then.
That download is fine on my machine and on the others.
The first thing to do is run CCleaner.

i just clicked on the link that i posted which i believe is the same as pam's, and downloaded
avg75free_430a828.exe 7.5.430

it saves as an .exe file, and i can double click it and run the program.

have you scanned for viruses or spyware, using online utilities? seems strange that all the links you click and download from give it to you as a .pf file.

Thanks Pam, Ob1, Sunset and clroberts. I just loaded the OS on this computer so the caches should not be filled with too much garbage just yet I guess. I have been to very few sites as well...so the chances of a virus are pretty slim...I don't have a virus scan on this computer..obviously..lol

So my installer is corrupted apparently? Now it is making sense since I cannot install much of anything.

Looks like I need to buy some anti-virus software. I also need to run a utility to test my hard drive. What is NCRC?..should I go ahead and do that regardless of the warning? Not sure about the failed download....I doubt it though because it has happened a number of times with AVG and now CCleaner.

How do I reinstall the installer?....that sounds funny to say the least!


Any other suggestions?

Apparently that syntax error is Microsoft's straight forward way way of telling me I need to add a kernel (as I read it from Trend Micro)....so I did.

Still wondering how to reinstall an installer...will google it.

you sure are having a lot of problems for a new install that is barely been used.

i would run chkdsk from the command prompt and possibly a windows repair.

is the hard drive old? maybe run H.drive diagnostic to see if there are bad sectors,etc.

You're probably facing a component check starting, as Ob1 suggested, with your hard drive.
For whatever reason XP is not installed correctly.

If this is a new install, I'd wipe it and start over. You have some serious Windows issues already. Your problem is not AVG's fault at all. Install all your drivers and do all your Windows updates before installing utility software. If your XP CD doesn't have SP2 on it already, slipstream it.
